Richard Baker Obituary

Richard Thomas Baker

Louisville - Richard Thomas Baker, 61, Louisville, departed for his heavenly home on May 19, 2020. He passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, following a courageous battle against cancer.

A devoted father and husband, he served joyfully with the Middle School Ministry of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville where he was a legend for his superball drops, snowman poker, and rockets and pizza. He strove to help kids get connected to Jesus and to find their place in the church.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Jones Baker, and son, Jared Baker, both of Louisville; a sister, Sue Carroll (Dan), Chandler, Arizona; a brother, David Leonard Baker (Ann Gibson), Shelbyville, Ky.; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Leonard Richard Baker.

A native of Lexington, Ky., Rich earned his master's degree at the University of Kentucky. While his career as a clinical research monitor took him around the world, he remained close to his family by keeping his office at his homes in Clyde, N.C., followed by Louisville.

A talented chef, he cooked at times for the Queen of England, the Sheik of Dubai and a homeless shelter in North Carolina.

The family is eternally grateful to the many who helped in the time of need, including Amy Dones, Kay Jones, Guy Jones, Hosparus Health, members of Southeast Christian Church and cancer support group, neighbors and friends.

Due to the Covid 19 virus a memorial service will be held at a later date.

I am lucky to have worked with him briefly at Roche and listened to him tell of the joys of working with youth in his town. I will remember him for his gracious nature, smiling face and authentic love for life. He was courageous to the end, and spoke nothing of love for his family when I last spoke with him. I know his physical absence leaves a gaping hole for many, but he won't soon be forgotten.

I am so sorry. Rich was so genuine and inspired me with his courage and hope in the face of adversity. I will miss discussing the latest board game to play with families as he truly cherished being together with his family.
