It is months since he’s been gone, yet I learned only today of Stephen’s passing. We knew each other at Colorado State and, over the years since, I have followed his work. It is a loss that there should be no more of it. He was a real painter. Rarer still among painters who are any good, he was a good man.

No artist was more dedicated or talented, and no person we know more courageous than Stephen Brown. His unique talent will be missed, as will be his kindness, determination and humor.

Stephen was definitely my favorite teacher at HAS. My fondest memories of painting are under his instruction. He helped to mold and shape the artist and teacher I am today. I have always thought about Stephen over the years and I am saddened by this horrific news. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and dear friends.

Stephen was my mentor and favorite teacher at Hartford Art School. He had a major influence on my life, encouraging me to study painting and pursue a career teaching college art. I wouldn't be who I am today if I hadn't met him. He was an amazing artist and such an inspiration. I offer my deepest condolences.

Although I never had Stephen as a teacher while at the Hartford Art School, I was always enamored by his work and dedication.

With deepest sympathy and a heavy heart I offer my condolences.

Stephen was one of my oldest friends from college at CSU. What a wonderful person and friend he was during those crazy days. He was destined to be a great artist and clearly listened to and stayed with this passion.
My deepest condolences to all of you - especially knowing the horror of his illness over the past years.
Fondly,
Meryl Nierman
