Whitney Dunlap Obituary

VERSAILLES - Dunlap, Whitney II, husband of the late Sally Maggard Dunlap, Springdale Farm, Versailles, KY, died on July 24, 2011.

Born January 15, 1932 in Kansas City, KS, he was the son of Anne Arthur and Tavner Dunlap, Sr. His mother passing away at his birth, he returned to Kentucky, where he was raised by his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Whitney Dunlap, and then later by his father and step-mother Myrtle Dunlap. A graduate of Woodford County High School, he was President of his Senior Class and earned national honors as a Star Farmer in the FFA. He graduated with a BS in Agriculture from the University of Kentucky where he also was a brother in Kappa Alpha Order and in ROTC. Following college, he served in the US Air Force as Squadron Navigator reaching the rank of Captain. He returned to Woodford County in 1960 where he made his home on ancestral land.

A successful and innovative farmer, he led the introduction of no-till farming, double cropping, crop mapping, direct marketing and other technologies in conjunction with the UK College of Agriculture. He was a lifelong member of Pisgah Presbyterian Church serving faithfully in many capacities. He was a part year resident of Naples, FL and loved to gather with his many friends at the Coffee Club and play golf at the Country Club of Naples. He will be remembered as a man with a knack for making friends, who loved to share his garden with everyone he knew, who secretly sponsored young people in getting their college degrees, and who could usually be found on warm summer nights rocking on his screen porch.
