He was born in Canicio, Madeira Island of Portugal, on Sept. 23, 1904, a son of the late Manuel Gouveia and Guihermina (de Jesus Calisto) Freitas. He had lived in Lowell and Dracut for the past 86 years.
Before retiring, Mr. Freitas was manager of the Brentwood Bowling Lanes of Lowell. He had also worked in the shoe manufacturing trade and was a professional bowler.
He was a lifelong parishioner of the former St. Peter's Church and a member of the Holy Name Society.
He was also a member of the Senior Citizens of Lowell and Dracut and a member of the Brentwood Bombers.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Paul A. Freitas and his wife, Florence (proprietors of The Commonwealth House of Lowell); two daughters and a son-in-law, Jean L. Rourke and her companion, Robert Williams, of Moultonborough, N.H., and Fort Myers, Fla., and Gloria M. Mayotte and her husband, Raymond, of Moultonborough, N.H., and Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Angela Gouveia (Freitas) Santos of Madeira Portugal; 11 grandchildren, Paul W. Freitas and his wife, Victoria, of Hampton, N.H., Gary R. Freitas and his wife, Christine, of Dracut, David C. Freitas of Lowell, Michael C. Freitas and his wife, Linda, of Lowell, Terrence M. Rourke and his wife, Leann, of North Chelmsford, Christopher J. Rourke and his wife, Patti, of Hampstead, N.H., Kevin M. Rourke of Lowell, Raymond R. Rourke of Boston, Deborah A. Carroll of Milford, N.H., Christine M. St. Pierre and her husband, Lee, of Wilton, N.H., and James L. Carroll and his wife, Kimberly, of Bedford, N.H.; 12 great-grandchildren, Paul, Jacob, Riley, Ryan, Cory, Gabrielle, Nolan, Mason, Ally-Joan, Mackenzie, Madeline and Jack; and several nieces and nephews in Portugal and the United States.
