Alexander Liakas Obituary

Alexander V. Liakas
Former Dracut pharmacy owner, Army Vet; 86
DRACUT, MA - Alexander V. Liakas, 86, died peacefully on Friday, August 5, 2016, at Lowell General Hospital, with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Minna (Fetzberger) Liakas, with whom he shared over 60 loving years of marriage.
Born in Lowell on January 15, 1930, he was a son of the late Vessaris and Nancy (Georges) Liakas. He was a graduate of Lowell High School, and then went on to proudly serve his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War, until he was honorably discharged. Alexander went on to attend the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, where he earned his Bachelors degree.
Upon graduating college, he opened "Alexander's Pharmacy' in 1961 on Hampson St. in Dracut. He later moved the business to 505 Nashua Rd., where he owned and operated it until retiring in 1985, alongside the medical building he constructed, where it stands today.
In his younger years, Alexander enjoyed bowling and deep sea fishing. He was also a proud member of the Greek American Legion for over 40 years. Above all, his favorite memories were spent with his family, particularly his grandchildren, whom he cherished dearly.
In addition to his wife, he is survived and will be deeply missed by his three children, Vessarios Liakas and his wife, Jayne of Dracut, Nicholas Liakas and his wife, Melissa of Dracut, and Nancy Baskey and her husband, John of Lexington; and two siblings, Nicholas Liakas and his wife, Spyridoula of Dracut, and Vaia Koumantzelis and her husband, Arthur of Lincoln, MA; as well as many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
LIAKAS - Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on MONDAY, August 8th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Ave., DRACUT. His funeral will be held from the funeral home at 8:45 a.m. on TUESDAY, August 9th, with his funeral service to directly following at 10 a.m. in St. George's Greek Orthodox Church, Lowell. Burial will take place in Westlawn Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alexander's memory c/o Greek American Legion post 1, 228 Worthen Street, Lowell, MA 01852. My condolences to the Liakas family from all Alex friends at the Greek American Veterans. Alex was always generous and very supportive. He will be missed by all that knew him and especially by the Saturday group. Alex brought lots of humor and compassion to all and the Saturday group has lost a good friend. May Your Memory be Eternal.
