Retired Billerica, MA schoolteacher; 64
LINCOLN, NH & THE VILLAGES, FL -- Angelo J. "AJ" Mara, 64, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at his home, following a short illness.
Born on July 24, 1949 in Boston, MA, he was the son of Salvatore and Angelina (Di Pietro) Mara. Angelo was a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School in Boston, earned his BA from Boston State College, and his Master's from Fitchburg State.
For 34 years, he was a science teacher at the Marshall Middle School in Billerica, MA. He also served as Student Council Advisor, Girls JV Soccer Coach, Boys Varsity Soccer Coach, and Boys JV Volley Ball Coach.
He enjoyed an active lifestyle that included skiing, playing tennis, pickleball, and golf.
Angelo was also an avid New England Sports Fan.
In retirement, he split his time from April to Nov. at The Villages in Florida and Dec.-March at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, NH.
He leaves his wife, Sue (Perkins) Mara of The Villages, FL and Lincoln, NH; two sons, Scott Mara and wife, Caroline of Mesa, AZ, and Brian Mara and wife, Nicole of Kaneohe, HI; grandchildren: Ryan, Dylan, McKenna, Andrew, & Alanna, a niece, Kate Visser of Scottsdale, AZ.
MARA -- A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, Saturday, February 22 at St. Joseph Church, 25 Church St, Lincoln, NH. Calling hours will be held from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Friday, February 21 at Fournier-Hale Funeral Home, 144 Main St, No Woodstock, NH. (Angelo's request is that those attending wear casual attire please). Entombment will be at Highland Memorial Park in Ocala, FL. Memorial donations may be made to either: St. Mark's Church, 7081 SE Highway 42, Summerfield, FL 34491 or St. Joseph's Church, 26 Church St., Lincoln, NH 03251. My heartfelt thanks to all the students, administrators, families, faculty and friends that have written such beautiful memories about Angelo. His passion was teaching and coaching so we were lucky to have had so many wonderful years of teaching together at the Marshall Middle School. Special thanks to the soccer teams that sent the flowers. The outpouring of love and support at this difficult time is so appreciated by Angelo's family and especially by me. So many of you came to his wake and mass up in NH and then again at his burial in FL. He was my husband and best friend and I will miss him so much. I know that if there are sports in heaven he will be smiling down and watching over all of us as he plays.

Dear Sue and Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Angie's passing. The years that I spent working with the two of you to organize the camp program were some of the best years of my life. The lessons that I learned from each of you during that period were instrumental in the formation of my vision of what the camp program should be. The laughs we shared were good for the soul. I sorry I never got to thank you properly. Peace and love in difficult times.

I am so sad to hear of Mr. Mara's passing. I still tell my children to this day about my favorite teacher of all time. I was lucky enough to have him for 6th and 7th grade science and for student counsel. Such a fun kind hearted teacher. I will always remember him.

Mr. Mara was good teacher and friend to many who passed through the halls of Marshall Middle. It is said a good teacher leaves a lasting positive impression on his/her students. This can always be said of Mr. Mara. He made science fun. You could see he enjoyed making a difference with young people. I will always remember the Hogan's Heroes theme song he would whistle. Teachers like Mr. Mara were Billerica's Heroes. My deepest condolences to the Mara family.

Dear Sue and family,
Lil and II were shocked and saddened to hear of Angelo's passing. Angelo was a wonderful person and did so much for the students in Billerica. Many students and parents were lucky to have had Angelo in their lives.

So sorry for you loss. He is a great man and I will always remember the times he taught me at the Marshall and the times I would see him and you at Loon. I even still have the signed book he gave me as a farewell gift when he left the Marshall. I'm so sorry again.

I am so sorry for your loss. "Coach Mara" was my assistant volleyball coach and was an amazing person who was always so positive with the kids. He was great to work with and was always so supportive. I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work together. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by all who knew him.

Dear Mrs. Mara and family,
I was lucky enough to meet both of you when I attended Marshall Middle School and had you as my homeroom reacher in 6th grade. Through soccer I met Mr. Mara who was always kind enough to let me attend the high school varsity games and even help out as ball boy all the way up until I eventually played for him at BMHS. Mr. Mara was an excellent coach as well as a motivator and I will never forget all the great memories we shared through soccer as well as his inspirational speeches before our games. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and I wanted to pass along my thoughts and prayers to you and your family today.

Dear Sue and family,
The news of Mr. Mara's passing was sad news to hear. He was the BEST teacher and was one of the reasons I fell in love with science and am in the medical field. I had him in 85-86 and I remember his classes like they were yesterday! My prayers and thoughts go out to you in these most difficult times.

I spent many days playing basketball after school with Mr. Mara. A really nice guy. I was not fortunate to have him as a teacher but I did have Ms. Perkins. My condolences and rest in peace.

So sorry to hear of Mr Mara's passing. I didn't have the pleasure of having him for a teacher, but, I have the funniest memories of him from our Camp Bourndale trip. Funny how some people have the ability to etch such memories in the minds others; just from a weekend. He was one of those teachers for me. My sympathy to all of you.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Mr. Mara's passing. Not only was Mr. Mara an amazing Science teacher, he was a friend to every student who ever had the privilege of having him. He understood that it was hard to be a teenager. He always had an open door, and always went out of his way to make sure he was there for us. It is amazing he had the time with all the extra things he did for us, the dances, student council, sports after school! I know he made a huge influence in my life, and I know that he did for many, many others too. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Perkins and his family.

Unfortunately, I didn't attend the Marshall Middle School. But Mr. Mara was my soccer coach in high school. We had a great time on that team and I will always remember Mr. Mara believing in me. He was a great man and will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mr. Mara's passing. I want his family to know that he left behind an incredible legacy in every student lucky enough to cross paths with him, whether that was in science class, DJ-ing at Friday night dances, at Camp Bournedale, on the student council, tirelessly running the annual magazine drive, or coaching soccer. Mr. Mara taught a long line of us "Clark Bars," starting with my Dad and continuing with my brothers and me. He was always full of energy, good advice, funny jokes, and a semi-forgiving homework policy ahead of its time(a riff on Meatloaf's "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad"). Mr. Mara got me interested in science, which ultimately lead to me becoming a cancer researcher. Becoming a better person in general was the icing on the cake. He will be forever missed, but never forgotten.

Mr. Mara was a fun & caring teacher. I remember his jokes in class, when he was DJ at the dances, Camp Bournedale.... He was one of my favorite teachers. You couldn't ask for a better teacher than Mr. Mara. He made me want to learn and achieve. He was also there for us as a friend. Someone who listened and smiled and really cared about us awkward and impressionable teenagers. He was one of a kind and I will remember him forever as the greatest teacher I have ever had.

My deepest condolences to the Mara family. Coach Mara was my soccer coach at Billerica High for 3 years. He was a great motivator and excellent teacher. He taught us so much, both on and off the field. I'll never forget his pre and post game speeches and the kind manner in which he handled every situation.
