CHELMSFORD Christopher E. Sophos, 99, a
resident of Chelmsford since 1950, and formerly of
Lowell, died on Tuesday, April 29, 2008.
He was the loving husband of 51 years of the late
Mildred (Kelly) Sophos, who died in 1994.
He was born in Lowell, on August 15th 1908, the son of Emmanuel and Katherine (Andrian) Sophos.
He attended Lowell High School 1922-26 where he
excelled in track and field events setting a record for the standing broad jump. Mr. Sophos was in the class of 1930 at Harvard University.
Christopher worked for his father's business, E.G. Sophos Co. in Lowell. During WWII, Mr. Sophos worked as an ammunition inspector for the War Dept. at the Heywood Wakefield Plant in Gardner. After the war, he took a position as a salesman for Thompson Winchester Co, wholesale distributor of restaurant and hotel equipment. Between 1962 and 1972 he was employed as a Manufacturers Representative for G.S. Blakesley, Inc., where he covered New England. He then worked as a Factory Representative for various manufacturers.
During the early 1960's, Mr. Sophos formed his own company, Commercial Interiors which he continued to operate until recently. He was also a Licensed Real
Estate Broker, specializing in commercial property.
Mr. Sophos belonged to the Lowell Hellenic Heritage Association, and in 2004 he was selected for the Lowell Hellenic Institute's All Century Team. He was a past member of the Hellenic Cultural Council and a member and past president of the Dunes Beach Association in Eastham.
Mr. Sophos derived the most pleasure out of being with his family. He loved his cottage on the Cape where he spent many summers with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He also enjoyed puttering in his back yard in Chelmsford, and in more recent years, just sitting in the shed. He was also an avid coin collector.
He is survived by two loving daughters, Katherine York and her husband, Hans of Cathlamet, WA, and Christine Sophos and husband, Robert Fernandes of Seattle, WA; three grandsons, Aaron and Abraham York and Leray Leasure, all of Washington; and many nieces and nephews; and his caregiver, Jackie Rosado of
Lawrence.
He was the father of the late Peter Sophos, D.C. who died in 1982, a tragedy from which Mr. Sophos never fully recovered. He was also predeceased by two brothers, George Sophos and Alcibiades "Al" Sophos, and two sisters, Georgia Sophos and Eleanor Kimberling.

Chelmsford. A Funeral Service will be held on
Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Fr. John Sarantos Way, Lowell. Interment in Westlawn Cemetery. Donations may be made in Mr. Sophos' memory to the Lowell Hellenic Heritage Association, P.O. Box 9602,
