David Collins Obituary

Loving Husband, Father & Grandfather

Lowell

David J. Collins, age 79, of Lowell died on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Anne R. (Hire) Collins, with whom he was married to for 57 years.

He was born in Washington, D.C. on August 30, 1944 and was the son of the late Albina (O'Neill) and Patrick Collins. After high school, David proudly enlisted in the United States Army and went on to serve his country in the Vietnam War. Prior to retiring, he worked as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for many years.

David cherished his time spent with his wife, family and most importantly his grandkids. He could best be described as your loyal, family man who loved to see everyone happy. David was an avid sports fan and would sit and talk sports with anyone who had an interest.

He loved taking long rides in the car to the beach and mountains, never taking the same route home. He instilled his love of video games to his grandchildren, he was equally excited as they were for each new game that came out. Christmas was his favorite holiday. He always had a Christmas Tree lit in his room and was known for his "Christmas Countdown," no matter what day in the year it was. He loved music; Motown, Top 40 and most of all the Beatles.

In addition to his wife Anne, David is survived and will be deeply missed by his children, Kristine Lagana and her husband Michael of Hudson, NH and David Collins, Jr. and his wife Kimberly of Lowell; his three grandchildren, Michael, Hannah and Patrick; his sister, Patricia McCarthy; his two best friends, Robert Desmond and Richie Collins; as well as many other family and friends.

He was the father of the late Joseph Collins and brother to the late John, Michael, Dennis, Hannah Mary, Gail, Ellen and Elizabeth.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend David's Funeral Mass at ST. MICHAEL CHURCH, 12 6th Street, Lowell on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 10 AM. Burial to follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory either to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memorials Processing, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250. For condolences or directions, please visit www.mckennaouellette.com.

I worked with Dave at the First National Grocery store on Middlesex street in Lowell many years ago. In the summer of 1965 being drafted and climbing the stairs of the bus in Billerica all alone that first morning; a familiar voice called to me from the back of the bus. "Hey Bob, come and join us." Dave was with a half dozen of his friends from Lowell. What a joy to join them.

I pray that Dave's loved ones are comforted by their happy memories of him.

To The Collins Family,
I know you will not know me, But my name is Ricky Kierce, and there used to be a bunch of us that hung around O'Donnells Park. That is where I first met Dave. He was a True Gentleman and easy to talk with about many topics.
I am sorry to hear that Dave has passed away.
He was a Great Guy and a True Friend.

Dave was a friend for more than 60 years we both shared the same "hobbies". Dave was a deeply religious man and I am sure he is on the fast track to heaven. You couldn't ask for a more loyal friend. When speaking to his family they said he was "the greatest father in the world". May you rest in peace my old friend.
