Edward Higgins Obituary

Edward F. Higgins Devoted Husband, Father & Grandfather LOWELL Edward F. "Ed" Higgins, 78, the beloved husband of Alexandria (Gerakines) Higgins, a resident of the Sacred Heart neighborhood, passed away Monday evening, April 27, 2009 at Saints Medical Center. Edward was born September 3, 1930, one of seven children of the late Thomas and Florabelle (Drumm) Higgins. Edward attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of St. Peter's Grammar School. In 1950, Mr. Higgins enlisted in the National Guard where he served for four years. He married Alexandria Gerakines on November 11, 1956, and together they celebrated 52 years of marriage. Mr. Higgins was employed for over 20 years with Palm Building Materials. He later worked at the Hydro Power Plant in Lowell. Mr. Higgins was a parishioner of the former Sacred Heart Church. He enjoyed all sports, especially the Boston Red Sox, bowling and softball. He was a loving grandfather who was always present at his grandchildren's sporting events. He was a "Santa" volunteer at the Lowell VFW when his children were small. He was also active as a coach in the Babe Ruth League in Lowell. Edward was always there to lend a helping hand whenever anyone needed it. Most of all, Edward will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. Surviving Mr. Higgins in addition to his wife Alexandria are his five children, Patricia Gaudette and her husband James of Lowell, Dorothy Chartier and her husband Joseph of NH, Karen Higgins of Lowell, Kathleen Higgins and her fiancé Alan Martin of Hudson, MA, and Edward Higgins and his wife Carol of Lowell; twelve grandchildren, James, Laura, and Genevieve Gaudette, Joe and Nicole Chartier, Adam, Kevin, and Tricia Higgins, Alexandria and Kristin Higgins, and Jared Yan and Kal Higgins; two great grandchildren; four brothers, Robert Higgins, Walter Higgins, James Higgins, all of Lowell, and Richard Higgins and his wife Pamela of NH; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Dora Higgins of Lowell, Dorothy Higgins of NH, Stephen Gerakines, Charles Gerakines, Perry Gerakines, John Gerakines, Kyriakos Gerakines, James Gerakines, Pauline Soukaras, Rose Furbish, and Marilyn Wilson, also many nieces and nephews. Mr. Higgins was also the brother of the late Margaret Higgins, Thomas Higgins and brother-in-law of the late George Gerakines. HIGGINS In Lowell, April 27, Edward F. Higgins, beloved husband of Alexandria (Gerakines) Higgins. Family and friends may call at the FAY McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 105 MOORE STREET LOWELL, on THURSDAY from 4 until 8 P.M.. Mr. Higgins' Funeral Service will take place on FRIDAY MORNING at 10 o'clock in the Funeral Home. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Edward's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress Street, 5th Flr. Boston, MA 02210.
