Gilbert Smith Obituary

Gilbert Smith of Wilmington, Navy Veteran; 88 Wilmington Mr. Gilbert Smith, 88, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. Mr. Smith was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on August 7, 1919, he was the son of the late Thomas and Abigail (Powell) Smith. Gilbert moved to the United States as a young boy, his family first lived in Somerville, then Watertown, where Gilbert graduated from Watertown High School and finally settled in Framingham. Gilbert enlisted in the U. S. Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged in November of 1945. Gilbert and his wife Maria Jean (Devlin) Smith moved to Boston following the war and then they moved their young family to a farm in Hancock, NH, where they worked and lived for 18 years. The family then moved to Wilmington in 1964, where Gilbert remained until his death. Prior to retirement, Gilbert worked as a engineer for Microwave Associates (MA\COM) in Burlington for many years. In his spare time he loved to golf, do woodworking, and play the piano for folks at the nursing homes and at Lahey Clinic. Gilbert was the beloved husband of Jean (Devlin) Smith of Wilmington, devoted father of David Smith of Wakefield, Gary Smith & his wife Marie of Chelmsford, Deborah Whitworth & her husband Jon of Pelham, NH, Pamela Smith and her partner Ed Belekewicz of North Providence, RI, and Kristine Smith of Billerica, loving grandfather of 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, dear brother of Walter Smith of Framingham, and the late William, Thomas, Arthur, Beatrice, Lillian, Annie, Dora, and Minnie. SMITH Gilbert, 88, of Wilmington, October 30, 2007. Beloved husband of Marie "Jean" (Devlin) Smith. Visiting hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, November 3, from 2-4 p.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 4:00 p.m. Memorial donation's in Gilbert's name may be made to the National Stroke Association, 9707 E. Easter Lane, Centennial, CO 80112 or to the Charity of One's Choice. U. S. Navy Veteran WWII.
