James Miceli Obituary

James R. Miceli
State Representative - represented the towns of Wilmington and Tewksbury

Representative James R. Miceli passed away peacefully on April 21, 2018.

A man of unerring moral principles, consummate integrity and deep devotion to his constituents and, above all, his family, State Representative James R. Miceli was the second-longest serving member of the Massachusetts Legislature. He continuously represented the towns of Wilmington and Tewksbury since his 1977 election to the House of Representatives, and he was a passionate and tenacious advocate for his constituents and the causes he held dear. During his 21st term, he was Vice Chair of the House Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change and served on the Joint Committee on Ways and Means, the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development, the House Committee on Personnel and Administration, and the House Committee on Ways and Means.

Rep. Miceli grew up in Boston's North End and graduated from Boston English High School in 1953. He earned a bachelor's degree in business from Northeastern University in 1958 and met his beloved wife, Jean Mattson, while both were students at Northeastern. They were married on August 9, 1958, in Rockport, Massachusetts, and moved to Wilmington in 1961. Rep. Miceli began his career in the insurance industry at State Mutual Insurance Company in 1958, moving to Liberty Mutual Insurance Company a year later. In 1972, he joined the Walter G. Leavitt Agency in Stoneham and opened his agency in Wilmington in 1975. Rep. Miceli retired from his insurance business in 2000 and focused on his work in the legislature for the next nearly two decades.

Rep. Miceli's political career commenced in 1963 with his appointment to the Wilmington Planning Board. He was elected to the Board of Selectmen in 1966, and he served four terms, two as Chairman, until 1978. His first term in the House of Representatives began in late 1977.

Known for the legendary work ethic that drove his above-and-beyond effort for all he served, Rep. Miceli was kind, compassionate and exceptionally thoughtful in the many ways that he helped people throughout his life. Above all, he was dedicated to his family, and he took great pride in the accomplishments of his children, Hope, James Jr. and Christina, and his cherished grandchildren, Andrew Jr., James III, Katherine, Q Jane, Alexander and Christopher.

Rep. Miceli is the son of the late Vincenzo and Louise Miceli and brother of the late Josephine McCoy. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean; daughter and son-in-law Hope and Andrew Spalla of Trumbull, Connecticut; son and daughter-in-law James Jr. and Joanne Miceli of Sparta, New Jersey; and daughter and son-in-law Christina Miceli and Sanford Arbogast of Tewksbury. He is also survived by his grandchildren Andrew Spalla Jr. of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Katherine Spalla of Astoria, New York; James III and his wife, Shanna, Miceli of Arlington, Virginia; Q Jane and her husband, Alexander, Carleton of Fort Lupton, Colorado; and Alexander Arbogast and Christopher Arbogast of Tewksbury. Rep. Miceli is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

MICELI - Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Avenue (Route 62), Wilmington, MA, on Thursday, April 26th from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and 6:00-9:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, April 27th at 10:30 a.m. in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Avenue, Wilmington, MA. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA.

Dear Jean, awhile ago, our Mother Irene,
(my Father Carl, was Jimmy's Uncle) celebrated a very important birthday. You and Jimmy made a point of coming to the south shore and honoring her. It meant so much to her. We will always remember that kindness. Take care, Karen Derman and

To Jim's Family:
I first met Jim when I was 14 years old, trying to find a sponsor for my "Soap Box Derby," car. Jim was a member of the Wilmington J.C.'s, and got Mike DeMoulas, to sponsor me. We remained friends, and after I returned from Vietnam, in 1970, Jim was about the only one to say "Welcome Home." Years later I became involved with the Disabled American Veterans, and began to find ways to honor my four Wilmington friends and classmates Killed in Action, in Vietnam. It was not a popular thing to do, at the time, and many were against me doing it. Jim stepped right up front in helping me, by assisting me getting a piece of State owned land for the first monument in Wilmington Honoring a Vietnam Veteran (Pfc Richard Welch, KIA September, 1968). Jim remained as my go to guy as I fought to build the remaining three monuments, and was always the first person to show up at the dedications. Jim has been one of the people in my life, I have always looked up to, and has always been there to help Veterans when ever they asked. Jim has always been one of my mentors" growing up, and I own a lot of my success in life to his guidance and "Trail". I will forever be thankful for support and friendship. Wilmington and Tewksbury has lost an "Icon" and I hope the people of both towns realize that. NO one can replace him, ever! Rest in Peace, my friend. You have made this world a much better place to live!

State Representative Jim Miceli served his constituents well for decades and was always willing to attend an event or lend a hand when asked. We lived in Tewksbury for over 25 years and got to know Jim and could always count on him for his dedication, compassion and kindness. We often looked forward to our conversations with Jim at Market Basket in Wilmington which were always meaningful and pleasant. Tewksbury is a better place because of Jim Miceli. Thank you for your service Jim, may you rest in peace.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Miceli family. It was with sincere pleasure to have gotten to know Mr. Miceli as well as I did over the last 17 years. Always enjoyed getting his phone calls and chatting with him. RIP Mr. Miceli I sure will miss you.

Dear Jean and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to all of you. Jim was one of the kindest individuals I have ever known. As a State Representative he gave his all to the communities and beyond; many should follow his footsteps. When he said he would help he did. He was truly a kind, compassionate person and proved that through his actions. I will miss our chats at the Demoulas and different venues such as 4th of July on the common and Veterans events. I am so grateful Jim that you were able to join many of my Veterans events such as the Annual Dinners in North Reading. I always told you that you were the only democrat I voted for:): because you devoted your life to helping others allowing them to see the light at the end of the tunnel when they were in despair. You are going to be missed by so many you have touched through the years. My heart goes out to all the Miceli Family. God Speed State Rep Jim Miceli I know you are in the comfort of our Lords hands. May you all find comfort in the wonderful memories you have made. I will miss him very much.
