John E. Coppinger Jr.
Loving Father, Grandfather,

Great-Grandfather, Brother and Friend

BILLERICA -- John E. Coppinger Jr., age 89, husband of the late Jean F. (Kilmartin) Coppinger died Tuesday at the Lahey Hospital in Burlington.

John was born in Medford, Massachusetts July 2, 1926, a son of the late John E. Coppinger Sr. and Jane F. (Kelley) Coppinger and has been a Billerica resident for 50 years.

Mr. Coppinger served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and was training to be a pilot when the war ended. He was a successful insurance executive, including for many years with the Great American Insurance Company in Boston.

Mr. Coppinger was a graduate of Harvard College, Class of 1948, and was also the Captain of the 1948 Harvard Baseball Team. He was a former President of the Billerica Little League and coached for many years; he was also a former member of the Billerica Irish American Club and Billerica Town Meeting member. In his later years he enjoyed reading, keeping up with the exploits of his many children and grandchildren, discussing politics, and being an avid New England sports fan.

He is survived by his daughters, Katherine Ford and her husband Doug of Great Diamond Island, ME and Jean Coppinger of Portland, ME; his sons, John Coppinger III and his wife Ellen of Lowell, Peter Coppinger and his wife Jill of Billerica, Paul Coppinger and his wife Barbara of Billerica, Andrew Coppinger and his wife Joanne of Moultonborough, NH and Timothy Coppinger of Kennebunk, ME; his sisters, Margaret Murphy and her husband Ralph Murphy of Naples, Florida, Janet Goodrow of Claremont, NH and his sister-in- law, Ruth Coppinger of Reading, MA. John was pre-deceased by his brother Edward Coppinger of Reading, MA and brother-in-law Howard Goodrow of Claremont, NH. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

COPPINGER -- Of Billerica, Oct. 6, John E. Coppinger Jr. Funeral Friday from the SWEENEY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica at 11 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Andrew Church, Talbot Ave., N. Billerica at 12:05 p.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Coppinger's name to Friends of BEAM, 35 River St., Billerica, MA 01821 c/o Karen Collins.
