TEWKSBURY - John B. Dey, 83, a World War II veteran, and a Tewksbury resident nearly five decades, where he was an active member of St. William's Parish, died Friday, Nov. 29, at Winchester Hospital in Winchester after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Joan E. (Allard) (Martin) Dey, with whom he celebrated 24 years of marriage on Aug. 11.
He was born in Partic, Glasgow, Scotland, son of the late James and Helen (Totten) Dey. He came to the United States at the age of 3, settling in Cambridge. He graduated high school from Cambridge Rindge and Latin High.
During World War II, Mr. Dey enlisted in the U.S. Army and had earned the rank of tech 4th grade sergeant. He lived in Tewksbury since 1954, where he was a communicant of St. William's Church. He worked at the Commonwealth Energy Corp. for 39 years, retiring in 1978.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, William J. Martin III of Pelham, N.H., and Stephen C. Martin, residing in California; five daughters, Mary L. Stewart and her husband James, and Cheryl Ring and her husband John, all of Wilmington, Eileen Tufts and her husband William of Nashua, Jean Snook and her husband John of Westford, and Joan Ryan and Robert Dodd of Tewksbury; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was also the husband of the late Catherine McCarthy, brother of the late Jean Freitas and Betty Giraud, and father-in-law of the late Patrick Ryan.
