John Gorman Obituary

WW II Navy Veteran

TEWKSBURY: John F. "Johnno" Gorman, age 97, a longtime resident of Tewksbury, passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2021.

He was the beloved husband for over 67 years to the late Margaret V. (Hourihan) Gorman, who passed away on July 10, 2017.

Born on July 2, 1924, he was the oldest child of the late John and Catherine (McLaughlin) Gorman.

John was raised in Charlestown and graduated from Boston Latin High School.

In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Iowa.

He was awarded several decorations for his active-duty service including the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal.

Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he was employed by Massport at Logan Airport.

After his early retirement, John worked at the former Tattersall's in Wilmington, then at Haffner's in Tewksbury.

He was an avid reader and in his spare time loved working in his vegetable garden and tending to the beautiful impatiens he grew in his yard, but he mostly treasured the time he spent with his wife and family.

John is the father of Ann O'Hara and her late husband Jack, Patti McLennan and her husband Jack, and Nancy Maida and her husband Bob, all of Tewksbury. Grandfather of Jack O'Hara and his wife Sue, Kristy Forsythe and her husband T.J., Shaun McLennan and his wife Kim, Brian O'Hara and his wife Jen, Steven Maida and his wife Laura, and Jaime McLennan- Parziale and her husband Mike. Great Grandfather of Jack, Grace, Callie, Keegan, Rilyn, Bryce, Kensley, Brooklyn, Emily, Emersyn, and Trevor. John is survived by his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert Duerr of Methuen, John Hourihan, and Robert and Bette Mangano, all of Tewksbury; and many nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by his siblings and their spouses, Margaret (Erwin) Fletcher, Helen (William) O'Keefe, Catherine Duerr, Thomas (Joan) Gorman, Sally (Richard) Zannino, James Gorman, and also his sister-in-law, Sally Hourihan.

Calling hours are Thursday, Aug. 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury, to be followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. William's Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Services will conclude with interment at St. Mary Cemetery, 90 River Rd., Tewksbury. I was so sorry to hear about John's passing today. I was the manager of Haffners Service Station in Tewksbury, and enjoyed his demeanor and storytelling. I'll miss his smiling face.

I don't think anyone could remember "Johono" more than me. Living one home away from "Tat's", I almost lived there. I shoveled snow from in front of the store, we (my friends) hung out in front, and Johno, Hap, Margaret, and Leo, were like family. Johno and I would have some "Navy" talk when I first got home from Vietnam, and he was always there for me to talk to. People like him, who helped you grow up, and treated you like family, are never forgotten! I am heartbroken to hear he has passed, and I am sorry I will not be back in MA for his services. My heartfelt prayers go out to Ann and her family! Rest in peace my dear friend!

So we turn yet another page in the history of Wilmington, particularly, Silver Lake...John was a fixture at Tattersalls.. along with Margaret and Hap, the memories are not about the store, they´re about the people...all of whom are etched into my nostalgic memory bank... thanks, John... it was a pleasure to know you...!!!

So sorry for your loss. Will always remember your Dad as far back as when I was a kid going into Tat´s for ice cream when at the lake. He was a good man.
