John Vlahos, 96, WWII Veteran, passed away on Friday, October 7, 2022 at his home in Seabrook, NH. John was born in Lowell, on February 6, 1926, a son of the late Katina and Peter Vlahos. He grew up in the Acre Section of Lowell in his early years and lived in Hollywood, CA. Upon his marriage, he spent most of his years in Newburyport and retired in Seabrook, NH.
He was married to the late Rhea (Xilas) Vlahos and leaves two sons, Peter and Paul Vlahos and a grandson, Paul Micheal. His is also survived by his brother James Vlahos and his sister, Harriet St. Onge and several nephews.
John attended colleges in MA and NH. In 1944 he was assigned to the Air Corp as a gunner. His dream of becoming a pilot did not happen due to poor eye sight. In 1945 he was transferred to the 7th Army, 253rd Infantry, 1st BN, in Germany and the 1892 LS Company as a Corporal in Infantry in Rhineland, Germany and Central Europe where he did combat duty. Nearing the end of the war, John was transferred to Dachau, Germany as the Superintendent of Labor at the concentration camps. John received many medals during his tour but his proudest was the Combat Infantry Badge.
At the end of the war, John returned to Lowell. He met his wife at Salisbury Beach and made their home in Newburyport for most of his years. He was the owner of John's Television Repair Shop until his retirement. John took up karate, earned all his belts and in his 70's received his black belt. Quite an accomplishment for his age.
John is pre-deceased by his brother Harry Vlahos, his sisters, Clara Vlahos, Tina Porter, Lillian Katsiaficas, brother-in-law Chipper St. Onge and nephew, Clint St. Onge.
His sister wants to thank so many for the loving care from his caretakers, Helen from Area Home Care, Joanne from Arcadia Care, Courtney from Allied Care. Thank you to the staff from Meal on Wheels, the help from the American Legion in Seabrook, the patience & caring of the Seabrook Police Dept, Fire Dept and the ER, the staff from Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport and Merrimack Valley Hospice.
Thank you to the 24 hour nursing family, Yurri, Claudia, Dayan and Carlos and a huge thank you to Bonnie for the years of support, love and caring who went above and beyond caring for John. I could not have done this without you!
Visitation will take place at the M. R. Laurin & Son Funeral Home, 295 Pawtucket St., Lowell on Wednesday, October 12, from 10am to 12pm. His Funeral Service will follow at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Lowell at 12:30pm. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Westlawn Cemetery, Lowell.
