LOWELL - Martin J. Roth, a retired Captain of the Lowell Police Department, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2018, following a brief illness. He was 87 years old.

Martin was born in Lowell on December 30, 1930, a son of the late Martin H. and Mary (McNulty) Roth. He attended the Lowell Schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School. He also earned a degree in Criminal Justice while on the job in Lowell.

Marty proudly spent three years in the Massachusetts Army National Guard.

Marty was a Golden Gloves Boxer in his younger years. He had been the proprietor of the Hi-Lite Café on South Street. Marty loved watching baseball and collecting baseball memorabilia. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends and once carded a hole in one.

Marty joined the Lowell Police Department as a Reserve Officer in 1964. His career spanned 28 years.

He retired from the force in 1992, after serving as Captain and commanding officer of the Traffic and Accident Bureau.

Surviving Marty are his daughter, Erin Dumont and her husband Chris of Hudson, NH; his step sons, David Foley and his wife Deb of Nashua; Thomas Foley and his wife Tammi of Hudson, NH, and Kenney Foley and his wife Donna also of Hudson, NH; 6 grandchildren.

Marty was the brother of the late William Roth.

ROTH - In Marlborough, May 6, 2018, Martin J. "Marty" Roth, age 87, Retired Captain of the Lowell Police Department. Family and friends may call at the FAY McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 105 MOORE STREET, LOWELL, on WEDNESDAY, from 10 until 11 AM. Captain Roth's Funeral Service will follow at 11 AM, in the Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the Westlawn Cemetery.
