Miriam Hawking Obituary

Age 65, passed away quietly on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020 at Westford House Nursing Home, Westford, MA, after a ten-year struggle with early on-set Alzheimer's Dementia. Mim was the beloved soulmate for 37 years of Robert Hawking of Chelmsford, MA. Survived by daughters, Margaret Hawking of Chelmsford, and Annamarie Golden (Hunter Golden) of Longmeadow, MA, and granddaughters, Abbie and Lydia. Brothers and cousins and their families live far and wide, including Hingham, MA, Switzerland, Nova Scotia, Washington, DC, Florida and New Mexico. She cherished her "honorary sisters" Margie Loyer, Kathyrn Garcia, Marta Sprout, and their families. During the "long good-bye" of Alzheimer's, the caregivers and families whom she met through adult day care at The Atrium at Drumhill, Westford House and Compassus Hospice enhanced her quality of life with their kindness and compassion. They were often inspired by her humorous quips and warm smile. Special thanks go to her physician assistant, Bethany Vrouhas. Miriam earned bachelors' and masters' degrees in religious education at Creighton University, Omaha, NE. In a career spanning over 40 years she taught and/or served in campus ministry at Catholic high schools in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, St. Louis, MO, and Omaha, NE before relocating to New England and serving at the former Mount Saint Mary High School in Nashua, NH (1987-1992), and then 18 years at Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua (1992-2010) until retiring at age 55 when diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Still, with the help of friends, she was able to continue singing in the choir at 4:00 p.m. Mass at St. Mary's Church in Chelmsford and as a member of the Greater Lowell chapter of the Daughters of Abraham, an interfaith organization of Jewish, Muslim and Christian women.

Mim was an intelligent, respected colleague and friend who could never do enough for others. She was charming, caring, loving, sincere, effervescent, warm, and witty with a great sense of humor, and of course, was totally Irish. Mim lit up whenever she talked of her children and grandchildren, and she had an impact on all who were fortunate to know her. Rest In Peace, dear Mim, and my thoughts and prayers are with Bob, Annamarie, and Margaret.

When Miriam was an undergraduate at Creighton University (I believe in the 1970s), she assisted me in running the Honors Program as a work-study student. At the time, I was a professor of philosophy and running the Honors Program. I well remember her infectious smile and her efficiency in managing the bureaucratic side of managing a program. I recall once painting to a disorganized pile of papers on a table and complaining about my--definitely not her--mess. She said, "no problem," and within an hour organized all of it and sent out a cluster of memos. She was amazing. And her infectious smile--I can picture it as clearly today as 40 plus years ago. She was an amazing young--that's how I remember her--woman!

Bob, Margaret, and Annamarie, I am so sorry to hear that Mim has lost her battle, but I find relief in the idea that she is released from the pain she must have been in. She was one of the sweetest, most invested teachers I know. I also enjoyed seeing Mim and Bob’s loving partnership in such small things as a hand on the shoulder or an assist with putting on a coat. I know you’ve lost someone dear to you. Se as her colleagues feel that too, but I hope you will find comfort in all the good memories, large and small, which being a smile to your face, knowing it’s Mim who is reminding you she is still with you. With love, Jen
