He was the husband of Alice (Vieira) Fontaine, who died in 1975.
He was born in Lowell, July 16, 1930, the son of the late Rudolph Fontaine and Beatrice (Coderre) (Fontaine) Gendron. He resided in Dracut for the past 17 years. Previously, he lived in Lowell.
Mr. Fontaine was a decorated Army veteran who fought behind enemy lines and served with the 82nd Airborne during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Edith Nourse Rogers Chapter 25, and the VFW Post 8819 of Billerica.
Before retiring, Mr. Fontaine was a heavy equipment operator with Fort Devens. Previously, he was a bartender at the Whipple Cafe, Johny's Cafe, and the Lowell Lodge of Elks for 17 years.
Mr. Fontaine was also a member of the Tyngsboro Sportmen's Club and a life member of the East End Club.
He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed trips to the mountains and his summer home at Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
He is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Maryalice "M.A." and Bruce Gary of Lowell; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard W. and Carrieann (Hull) Fontaine of Dracut; five grandchildren, Tanya Gary-Mead and Kara Gary, both of Lowell, James McCullough, III, Matthew Fontaine and Brittanie Fontaine, all of Dracut; an aunt, Lillian Laurent of Lowell; also several cousins.
He also leaves his longtime companion of 18 years, Claire M. Noel of Dracut.
