Seng Ang Obituary

Stoneham

Seng Kim Ang, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2023, following a short battle with sepsis.

Seng was born on February 2, 1954, in Kandal, Cambodia, a small farming village on the outskirts of the capital. Seng was the second youngest of ten children. Seng loved growing up with his large family and dreamed of becoming a professional singer like his idol Sinn Sisamouth. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, Seng fled to Thailand, where he met his future wife, Kheng Ea, a fellow Cambodian refugee, at the Mai Rut encampment.

A year later, Seng came to the United States, living in Appleton, Minnesota, with a sponsor family from a local church. In 1981, Seng left Minnesota for Danbury, Connecticut, where Kheng had already settled. Seng found employment on the Kimberly-Clark factory line and married Kheng in November 1982. Together, Seng and Kheng saved money from their respective factory jobs and moved to Lowell, Massachusetts, opening Apsara Jewelry in 1986. Seng and Kheng operated Apsara Jewelry for the next 30 years, before retiring in 2016.

Seng was a man of many passions. He loved preparing Cambodian meals for his family on his outdoor stove, tending to his backyard tomatoes and eggplants, cheering on the New England Patriots, and above all singing. Seng leaves behind a wealth of recordings for his friends and family to treasure, including the songs he sang to rapturous applause at his older daughter's wedding.

Seng had a magnetic personality and was always ready with a joke. He was also unendingly dedicated to his family, filling up his son's gas tank whenever it veered on empty, stuffing his older daughter's fridge full of Cambodian meals at every visit, and MacGyvering a second set of locks in his younger daughter's house to assure himself of her safety. He was the consummate mix of strength, devotion, and pure silliness.

Seng is survived by his beloved wife of forty years, Kheng Ang, their children Kimberly Ang (Charles Zuckerman) of Shelburne, Vermont, Connie Ang (Uy Nguyen) of Smyrna, Georgia, and Kevin Ang of Stoneham, Massachusetts, his grandchildren Lydia and Jasper Zuckerman, and his many nieces and nephews in the United States and Cambodia.
