Arlene Louise Lewis, nee Hamman, 78, formerly of La Porte, Indiana, died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 3, in Springfield, Oregon.
Arlene was born on Oct. 5, 1942, in Prescott, Wisconsin. Her early years were spent on a farm before joining her parents on a journey to find work on post-WWII construction projects. The family eventually settled in Northwest Indiana, where Arlene graduated from Calumet High School in Gary, Indiana.
Arlene spent her adult years as the Court Clerk in Portage, Indiana, an office clerk, and for nearly 40 years as a real estate agent working in both Portage and La Porte.
She loved shopping, all music, especially Motown, and her heartthrob, Elvis; convertible cars, and animals – to a fault. For many years, Arlene was an active member of the Polish Falcons in La Porte and could always be found there on a Friday night at the fish fry. She loved her family and friends!
Arlene was predeceased by her daughter, Rebecca Kowalski of Chicago, Illinois. She leaves behind her son, David Melton (wife Kim) of Satellite Beach, Florida; her daughter, Christine Melton of Springfield, Oregon; her grandson, Trevor Melton of Anchorage, Alaska; her granddaughter, Tara Melton of Peoria, Arizona; her grand-puppies, Joey of Satellite Beach Florida, and Josie of Springfield, Oregon. Arlene is survived by her sister, Patricia Thomas, currently touring the country in an RV.
A gathering to celebrate Arlene's life will take place in Prescott, Wisconsin, at a time yet to be determined.

Arlene was married to my Uncle LaVerne. She was such a nice lady, she let me drive her red convertible. She will fly high on eagle's wings to heaven. Peace be to all her family.

My heart is sad. Arlene was a fun and sharp lady. She will be missed. I rented her house on Swanson for years then bought it. She was wonderful to me.

I have so much gratitude that I got a chance, albeit short, to meet and spend time with Arlene. She brought me so many smiles. Say hi to Elvia for me.
