Daniel P. Smith, 57, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at 5:10 p.m. in his home from a struggling battle with pancreatic cancer.
A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana, with Rev. Kevin Huber officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Saturday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.
He was born Sept. 17, 1963, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Norman and Dorothea (Walker) Smith. On Jan. 27, 2020, in Michigan City, Indiana, he married Jacqualine "Jackie" Good-Staples, who survives in Michigan City.
Also surviving are his mother, Dorothea Smith of Michigan City, Indiana; stepdaughter, Jennifer (Julio) Barron of La Porte, Indiana; stepson, Derek (Megan) Staples of Detroit, Michigan; three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Landen and Brody Staples; sister, Rebecca (Earl) Wantland of Michigan City, Indiana; two brothers, Dale Smith of Michigan City, Indiana, and Darrell (Trish) Smith of La Porte, Indiana; and his lifelong friend, Greg Cooper of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Smith; and brother, Ronald Smith, Sr.
Daniel was a Plant Engineer at Franciscan Health Michigan City and also had worked at Indiana State Prison and Federal Mogul. He received a bachelors degree in engineering from Purdue University and was a member of the Indiana Sheriff's Association and the American Society of Power Engineers, Inc. Daniel enjoyed bowling (accomplished two 300 games in his bowling career 1993/2001), gardening and karaoke, and he loved his cats. He was an avid Chicago Bears and NASCAR fan. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Rana, Woodland Cancer Center, Franciscan Health Michigan City, Dunes Hospice and his co-workers for their care and concerns. Daniel will be greatly missed.
