David Spencer Obituary

David H. "Spence" Spencer, 86, of Michigan City passed away on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021, at Franciscan Health Center in Michigan City.

Funeral services will be at the Warren Glenn Funeral Home in Union City, Pennsylvania. Burial will follow the services in Evergreen Cemetery in Union City, Pennsylvania.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Root Funeral Home in Michigan City, Indiana.

Spence was born Feb. 8, 1935, in Erie, Pennsylvania, to the late Hugh A. Spencer and Opal G. (Parmenter) Stoffan Spencer-Dunst.

Spence married Beth M. Spencer, who passed away on Oct. 28, 2013, after 35 years of marriage.

Surviving are five children, Laurel Lee (Paul) Smith of Oroville, California, Crystal Davis of Michigan City, David A. (Lisa) Pendragon of San Antonio, Texas, Tami Sue (Michael) Fryman of Pekin, Illinois, and Jamey (Jennifer) Spencer of Rolling Prairie, Indiana; numerous loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two stepbrothers, Fred (Beth) Stoffan and Thomas (Patty) Stoffan; and also surviving are cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

He is preceded in death by two sisters, Norma Jean Spencer Beaumont and Shaaron Spencer; and one brother, Robert Glenn Spencer.

Spence was a retired veteran who served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956; the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1961; and the U.S. Coast Guard from 1962 to 1977, where he received numerous awards for his dedication to the service he was in.

After discharge from the Coast Guard, he worked for the South Shore until 1999. He also enjoyed giving boat tours in Chicago and Munising, Michigan, and operating equipment at the Hesston Steam Museum.

He was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Michigan City. He enjoyed racing both cars and motorcycles, and flying his own private plane.

His greatest joy though was spending time flying on vacations with his wife, Beth, and volunteering his time helping others. He was a great lover of animals and telling stories. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Memorials may be made to the Michiana Humane Society or Fried's Cat Shelter in Michigan City.
