Duane Smith went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 10, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born on Oct. 18, 1937, in Mishawaka, Indiana, Duane's life was guided by faith from an early age. He followed his calling to Springfield, Missouri, where he earned a degree in pastoral ministries from Baptist Bible College – a foundation that would shape his lifelong ministry and service to others.
In 1963, Duane faithfully answered the call to plant Bible Baptist Church in Michigan City, Indiana. There, he not only built a church, but also a life rooted in community, love and faith, raising his family and serving as pastor for 27 years.
Duane is lovingly remembered by his wife of 31 years, JoAnn; and by his children, Diana (Ray) of Springfield, Missouri, Julie (John) of Evansville, Indiana, Mindy (Vic) of Williamsburg, Virginia, Becky (David) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, David of Kansas City, Missouri, Lainie (Beau) of Bullard, Texas, and Bobby (Christine) of Springfield, Missouri. He was a proud grandfather to 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He is now reunited in Heaven with his first wife, Joyce Elaine Kimble; as well as his parents, Merle and Freida Smith; his brother, Jim; and his grandson, Nicholas Bruner – a joyous reunion we can only imagine.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St, Michigan City, Indiana, at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service to celebrate Duane's life and faith beginning at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, we request a donation be made to Heart to Heart Hospice, Evansville, Indiana, or to a ministry of your choosing.
