Eugene P. "Shorty" Baughman, 90, of New Carlisle, Indiana, passed away at 3:32 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2022, at Millers Merry Manor in New Carlisle, Indiana.
He was born on Nov. 8, 1931, to the late David D. and Edna M. (Boyer) Baughman in Knox, Indiana, and has lived in New Carlisle since 1969, coming from La Porte, Indiana.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emma L. Baughman; one sister, Joy Baughman; two brothers, John Rogers and Terry Baughman; a sister-in-law, Joan Rogers; and a brother-in-law, Stanley Barnes.
Gene was a graduate of Rolling Prairie High School before serving in the U.S. Army, where he was a Korean War veteran. He also served in the National Guard, where he retired after 18 years.
Gene retired in 1993 from Modine Manufacturing Company in La Porte, Indiana, after 27 years. He was also the owner of Pa's Vegetable Patch, where he grew vegetables and sold them at his stand on North Hemlock Lane in New Carlisle, the Purple Porch Co-Op on Eddy Street in South Bend, the New Carlisle Library, and the Urban Garden Market on Bendix Drive in South Bend.
On Feb. 23, 1955, he married Emma L. McClellan in La Porte, Indiana. Emma passed away on Oct. 12, 2004.
Gene is survived by his two daughters, Brenda S. Pegg of Monson, Maine, and Samantha D. (Dale) Elkins of New Carlisle, Indiana; two sons, Thomas P. (Paula) Baughman of New Carlisle, Indiana, and Todd A. (Donna) Baughman of New Carlisle, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Donna Barnes of La Porte, Indiana, and Virginia (Michael) Glanders of Walkerton, Indiana; two brothers, Bob (Mauren) Baughman of New Carlisle, Indiana, and David (Dolly) Baughman of La Porte, Indiana; and one sister-in-law, Debbie Baughman of New Carlisle, Indiana.
A Memorial Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. (ET) Friday, June 10, 2022, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert St., New Carlisle, Indiana. No Funeral Services will be held. Private interment will take place at New Carlisle Cemetery at a later date.
Gene was a member of the American Legion Post 297 in New Carlisle, Indiana.

Pa was as much a dad to me as my own father was, maybe more. I loved him and Emma both. I will cherish all the memories I have for the rest of my life.
