Jeanne Arlene Scherner, born in East Chicago, Indiana, on Sept. 9, 1938, to William and Emily Potter, joined her sisters, Geri and Eleanor, in Heaven on Sept. 24, 2023.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Alfred E. Scherner. They lived in Michigan City since 1966, where they raised five daughters – whew: Denise Fithian (Paul), Linda Hall (Judson), Nancy Holkan (John), Julia Fetahagic (Alen) and Christine Dyson (Dorian).
Not only was Jeanne an incredible mother, she was also a grandmother to eight wonderful grandchildren, Scott Fogus (Brittany), Danielle Ricketts (Ben), Adam Fithian (Mallory), Emily Linsenmann (Jon), Leah Lukas (Jason), Rachael Dobos, Stephanie Humphreys (Travis) and Eva Fetahagic; eight great-grandchildren; and beloved nephews, Larry, Nick and Mike Basiaga.
Jeanne graduated from Washington High School in East Chicago in 1956. She began her career at Westinghouse, where she met her future husband, Al. She concluded her career as the executive secretary to the president of Citizens Bank in Michigan City in 1996.
Jeanne was a world traveler, with stops in Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama, but as a testament to her diversity, Las Vegas was always on the dance card.
Jeanne had many talents – an avid gardener, painter and cat wrangler to her dear feline friends. Past times included the opera, movies, cards and board games, where she won most of the time, sometimes with questionable integrity!
Jeanne was known for many things, primarily as being one tough Lugan. She was very proud of her Lithuanian heritage and was a devout Catholic. She was a member of Queen of All Saints Parish for 57 years, and even cleaned the church and attended Mass when it was held in the school basement with Father Cross. Jeanne sent all five of her children to Queen of All Saints to further their education and instilled in them the Catholic faith.
A special thank you to Jody and Amy who were her caregivers at the end of her life.
Jeanne will be missed profoundly and we know you are dancing in Heaven!

Worked at Citizens with her in the 1970's. She was wonderful! Liked her name so much that I named my daughter Jeanne.
