With a heavy heart, we share the passing of Judith D. (Stephens) Richter. Judy, as she was known to everyone, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at 3:29 p.m. at Brickyard Healthcare-Terrace Care Center. She bravely battled numerous illnesses that she had been dealing with since birth. Judy was a true fighter.
Born to Wilbur and Rena (Boody) Stephens on Oct. 26, 1946, in La Porte, Indiana, Judy grew up in the same city and eventually got married there. She had a brother, Wilbur Stephens, Jr., who sadly passed away before her.
On Nov. 2, 1974, Judy married Edmund Richter, a minister. Together, they spent 50 years as a loving couple, renowned in La Porte as the "Happily Married Couple." Their affectionate dynamic was evident to everyone they encountered, as Ed lovingly doted on Judy and made it his mission to keep her happy.
Although Judy and Ed didn't have children, they shared their home with many cats that they rescued or adopted from the local animal shelter. Judy had a particularly special bond with their last cat, Muffin, who remained her cherished companion until her passing.
Judy, a devout Christian, deeply loved Jesus and was known for her kind heart. She also played a significant role in raising her nephew, Christopher (Aey) Stephens of Texas.
During her final weeks at Brickyard Healthcare-Terrace Care Center, Judy was surrounded by her adoring husband, Ed, and many caring friends. Brickyard Healthcare-Terrace Care Center had been her and Ed's home since May, providing her with comfort and support during her last days.
Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will take place at Brickyard Healthcare-Terrace Care Center, 1900 Andrew Ave., La Porte, on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024, at 11 a.m.
