Leona M. Schlaak, 97, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 1:35 a.m. in Rittenhouse Senior Living of Michigan City, Michigan City, Indiana.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana, with Pastor William Fine officiating. Private burial will take in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
She was born May 20, 1927, in Michigan City, Indiana, to the late Rudolph and Laura (Dorsey) Heisman. On April 24, 1948, in Michigan City, Indiana, she married Roger Schlaak, who preceded her on Aug. 14, 2019.
Also surviving are three daughters, Carol (Terry) Weiler of Michigan City, Indiana, Jan (John) Skierkowski of Lafayette, Indiana, and Elaine Criswell of Michigan City, Indiana; six grandchildren, Katy (Brad) Thompson, Erik (Erica) Weiler, Jenna (Kyle) Wargo, Jacob (Ashley) Skierkowski, Sara Criswell and Alex Criswell; seven great-grandchildren, Allison, Kegan, Tatum, Evelyn, Anna, Emelia and Amaya; former son-in-law, Barry Criswell of Michigan City, Indiana; and extended family, friends and pets.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Norene Siegmund; and two brothers, Donald Heisman and Richard Heisman.
She retired after 21 years as a switch board receptionist at Sprague Devices and also had worked at Al's Supermarket and Indiana Bell Telephone Service. Leona was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and involved with the church choir and the ladies guild. The family would like to acknowledge their sincere appreciation to the staff of Rittenhouse and Traditions Health Hospice, especially nurse Krista.
