Marjory Steck Obituary

Marjory (Marge) Lee Sallwasser Steck, 95, of Santa Monica, California, and formerly of La Porte, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2024, at her daughter's home.

She was born Feb. 10, 1928, in La Porte, Indiana, to Milton J. Sallwasser and Dorothy (White) Sallwasser. She married Edward L. Steck Jr of La Porte June 25, 1949, at the First Methodist Church.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sister and her sons-in-law. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Randles of Santa Monica and Jan Leslie Steck of Rome, Italy; and her son, Scot, and daughter-in-law, Shelly, of Cambria, California; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, Bella.

She graduated from La Porte High School and attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. After her marriage, she lived in Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, Texas and Arizona before finally settling in San Diego in 1968.

She worked many jobs over the years including office manager for various churches and office work at companies such as Scripps Hospital, Cal Bio-Chem and Fun Fashions while raising her three children.

She loved the ocean, watching "Jeopardy," Mexican food, reading (last book read was "Hello Molly, A Memoir by Molly Shannon"), sitting in the sun at the beach or in the backyard, all sweets, ice tea, especially her "sun" tea, cats, flowers and the color orange.

She lived in San Diego, California, for 51 years before moving to Santa Monica for the last four years of her life. She donated her body to the UCSD (University of California at San Diego) medical school. A group memorial service was held in La Jolla, California, June 2, 2024, for the donors.

No other services were held. Her ashes will be scattered in the Pacific Ocean where she will join her husband Ed and her sister Sam.

She always had an upbeat personality and outlook on life until the end and made us laugh and smile every day. She was an inspiration to her family and is very missed.

Donations to her memory can be made to the charity of your choice.

My condolences to Marjory´s family. I was saddened to read about her recent death. That being said, it brought up many fond memories. The Sallwassers were close and dear friends of my parents, Robert and Dorothy Glasscott and our whole family. We lived in Michigan City.
As a child, I called Milt, "Uncle Trouble" because whenever he was around, it meant lots of fun and trouble The Sallwassers gave me a puppy for Christmas one year. He was adored for 15 years.
I was 4 when Marjory married and I was the flower girl in her wedding. I have lovely black and white photos of the whole wedding party.
My parents were part of Milt and Dorothy´s(we called her Dortha) and they served in my parent´s wedding.
Our families shared a long and wonderful history. I recently turned 80 and the memories feel even more special now.
Sending love and support, Gay Glasscott(Cincinnati, Ohio)
