Ophelia Jones, age 92, passed away peacefully in her home in Michigan City, Indiana, on May 2, 2025. She was born in Manchester, Tennessee, on Aug. 28, 1932.
Ophelia is survived by one son, Justin Wayne Gibson; two daughters, Juanell Vega and husband Jose, and Elaine Flitter and husband Dennis; and 11 grandchildren, Brian Gibson, Megan Campbell, Kyle Gibson, Jonathan Gibson, Jimmy Mayfield, Mark Vega, Lainie Billedeaux, Cheryl Novitzke, Matthew Jacks, Sandy Taylor and Jenny Jones. Also surviving are her brother, Gary Ferrell; and her very special sister-in-law, Christina Ferrell, who cared for her in her final weeks; as well as many great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 62 years, Billy L. Jones; two sons, Billy David Gibson and Gary Lee Jones; two grandson, Jeffery Gibson and Jonathan Jones; and two brothers, Burrell Lightburne and Autry Ferrell.
Ophelia worked for many, many years at Eastmoor Company as a seamstress. She also worked at Independent Steel Casting and Gateway Industries.
She and her husband were faithful, active members of Apostolic Lighthouse Church, donating much of their time and funds to the building and growing of the church.
Ophelia was very active and was a hard worker, always staying busy, right up until just a couple of years ago. At age 88, she helped her son, Wayne, paint the exterior of his house and the following year she helped him spread 80 yards of black dirt in his backyard. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, word search puzzles, yard work, garage sales and thrift stores. She loved a bargain!
Over the years, she and her husband owned many campers. They enjoyed traveling and loved wintering in Florida. Their adventures included not only camping, but also cruises, sailing to locations in Central and South America and the Bahamas. They also enjoyed a trip to Hawaii. But their most loved trip was to Israel, where they toured the Holy Land and visited many Biblical sites.
Friends and family may visit at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 4 until 7 p.m. and on Thursday, May 8, 2025, from 11:30 until the time of service at 12 p.m. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City, Indiana.
Note from her daughter, Elaine: Mom loved red dresses and red flowers. So, rather than the traditional black, please join and celebrate her by wearing a splash of red!
