Phyllis Jane Kahn, 84, a long-time resident of Michigan City, passed away peacefully of natural causes in her home on Thursday, April 7, 2022.
Born March 22, 1938, in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Teda and Henry Johnson. After she graduated from High School, Phyllis and her surviving sisters, Mary Zick, Ruth (Dwayne) Elliott, Helen Johnson and Dorothy Johnson, moved to Michigan City in 1956, where she worked at a variety of jobs including bank teller, receptionist and bookkeeper.
Phyllis was pre-deceased by her husband, Rolland Kahn, and together they raised eight children. Preceded in death by her son, Rick Kahn; and her sister, Barbara Halbeck.
She is survived by five daughters, Lisa Seaman, Lynn Gordon, Janine Kahn, Debra Kahn and Christine (Joe) Lilovich; and two sons, Keith (Vickie) Kahn, and Edward (Sue) Kahn. She will also be missed by her surviving grandchildren, Matthew, Eric, Jason, Tiffany, Justin, John, Aaron, Katie, Michael, Meghan, Jessica, Alayna, Alexandra, Isabella and Sean; and great-grandchildren, Makayla, Adrian, Liliana and Orion.
Phyllis was an active member of St Luke's United Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School for more than 30 years, where she was affectionately nicknamed "Candy" Kahn for the treats she would bring in for the children.
She put her arts and crafts skills to use while working on the annual Christmas pageant, summer Bible camp and flower arranging for the pot luck suppers and pancake breakfasts. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels for many years and was the secretary of the Village Green Neighborhood Association for a decade.
An enthusiastic gardener, Phyllis loved working in her yard planting and nurturing the many flowers and herbs that surrounded her home. When the weather turned chilly, Phyllis started baking her specialties, which included banana bread and peanut butter blossom cookies. The kids, grandkids, and friends were spoiled with homemade treats on every visit and all holidays!
Phyllis could often be found walking one of her beloved pet dogs through the neighborhood, around Striebel Pond or in the wooded trails behind her home. Over the years she adopted several stray cats, who were also the recipients of her great love and affection.
A private memorial service will be held with her immediate family.
