Russell A. Schlaak, age 93, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021, in La Porte, Indiana.
Russell was welcomed by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was reunited with many loved ones including his beloved first wife, Norma Lee Schlaak, mother of their son, Alan Lee Schlaak, and his beloved second wife, Ellen Schlaak. Russell was born in Niles, Michigan to Albert and Clara (Schendel) Schlaak. The family moved to Michigan City, Indiana, and raised their family in the area known as Canada on Union Street.
Russell was a graduate of Issac C. Elston High School class of 1947. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Artillery in Korea from 1950-1952.
Russell married Norma Lee Roach on July 2, 1955, and they were happily married for 38 years and 4 months until the time of her death on Nov. 22, 1994.
Russell was blessed with two happy marriages and two beloved wives. Russell married Ellen Miller on Sept. 20, 1996, at Earl Road Christian Church in Michigan City. Ellen Schlaak passed away on Jan. 13, 2017.
Russell is survived by his son, Alan Schlaak; stepson, John (Kay Schubert) Miller; sister-in-law, Leona Schlaak; and nieces, Carol (Terry) Wieler, Elaine Criswell, Jan (John) Skirekowski and Diane Costello.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Roger, Richard and Willis; and sister, Janice.
Russell loved all of his family and looked forward to seeing them at family gatherings. He worked at Weil-McClain for 45 years until his retirement in 1993. Russell is a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2536 in Michigan City. He really enjoyed bowling and proudly bowled for the VFW and Weil-McClain bowling leagues. Russell and Ellen moved to Florida in 1996. He also met many new friends at the Senior Living at Simeon Square, which has been his home since November of 2011. He enjoyed having them as neighbors and eating lunch with them and all the fun activities he had there. Russell was a member of Michigan City Christian Church.
Friends are invited to meet with the family on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 12 p.m. at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN, 46360, with Pastor Kim Cole officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wives, Norma Lee and Ellen at Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
