Stephen Sass Obituary

Stephen E. Sass Sr., 79, of Long Beach passed away unexpectedly at his home in Long Beach on April 9, 2022.

His wishes were to have no viewing or services.

Root Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Steve was born June 17, 1942, in Michigan City to the late Edward F. and Paula K. Sass.

He is survived by his son, Stephen E. (Jodi) Sass Jr.; two grandchildren, Sarah and Lindsey; one brother, John (Sue) Sass; brother-in-law, Darius Hill; sister-in-law Nancy Soller: niece and nephews, Angela Sass, Ted (Pat) Soller, Todd (Carol) Soller and Brent Soller; and many cherished friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Gloria; brother-in-law, Leonard Soller; and sister-in-law, Connie Hill.

Throughout his career, Steve wore many hats. A graduate of Marquette High School and Valparaiso University, he was notably a secondary and college school teacher, a sales representative for the Quaker Oats Company and Federal Glass, and a commodities broker at the Chicago Board of Trade. After retiring as a parole officer for the state of Indiana, he worked as a dispatcher for the town of Long Beach Police Department.

Steve was an outgoing, strong-willed patriarch who was often the family's needed strength in times of uncertainty. Above all, Steve cherished his granddaughters, and he enjoyed his time with his many friends at the Long Beach Police Department and Town Hall. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Shirley Heinze Land Trust, 109 W. 700 N, Valparaiso, IN, or online at heinzetrust.org.

To the Sass Family, especially John, Steve´s brother:
Hard to believe it has been a year already. He is truly missed and loved by all who knew him especially his classmates from St. Mary´s, now Marquette, Class of 1960. I´d say that all our classmates that have passed are having a big alumni reunion with Steve. He was a very likable and fun guy. Miss you Steve and you will never be forgotten. God Bless the Sass Family.

To the Sass Family: I offer my deepest condolences in the passing of Steve. He was a classmate of mine and I have so many memories of him that I will always cherish. My brother, Pat, was also in his class and he would come over to our house to ride in the old wooden milk truck in the back of our house. What good times. He will be missed by all who knew him , especially me . May you all find comfort and peace in knowing that he is in a better place and went peacefully. God Bless the Sass Family!
