Terrence Smiskey Obituary

Terrence K. Smiskey, age 87, peacefully passed away on Jan. 27, 2025, with his loving family by his side.

Born in Michigan City, Indiana, on Aug. 31, 1937, to Kenneth and Adeline (Gabrunas) Smiskey, who have preceded him in death, Terrence lived a life rich in love, generosity and dedication.

Terrence is lovingly remembered by his devoted daughter, Colleen (James) Keith; son, Kevin (Connie) Smiskey; sister, Karen Collison; grandchildren, Collin Keith, Sean (Alyssa) Keith, Michael Allen Keith and Kaitlyn Smiskey; great-grandchildren, Layla Keith, Luna Keith, Xemera Keith, Isabella Davis, Braxton Eric Keith and Kamiya Ann Keith; nephew, Kary Collison; and many cherished relatives and friends.

Terrence was united in marriage to the love of his life, Patricia May (Priebe) Smiskey, affectionately known as his "Patty Boo," who preceded him in death in November 1994. Terrence often expressed his unwavering devotion to Patricia, stating he would never remarry and looked forward to being reunited with her. He is also preceded in death by his beloved mother, Adeline (Gabrunas) Smiskey; his father, Kenneth Smiskey; his sister, Lori Smiskey; and his grandson, James Eric Keith.

Terrence's professional life was spent working until his retirement from Packaging Corporation of America, formerly Kaiser Aluminum. His dedication to his work was matched by his passion for the outdoors and a commitment to his community.

Terrence spent his early years hunting, fishing and smelting on Mount Baldy near their first home on Rice Street with his beloved English setter Clancy. He delighted in taking his children on adventures to the dunes, teaching them how to hike, fish, hunt and pick wild berries, instilling a deep appreciation for nature and its wonders. These cherished memories created a lasting legacy of love and learning for his children.

Terrence also served as a marksman (rifle) reservist from Sept. 24, 1960, to July 25, 1966, at the U.S. Army Corps Fort Bragg, completing six months of active service training.

A kind, caring and giving man, Terrence was deeply moved by the suffering of others and was always ready to extend a helping hand. His generosity knew no bounds, supporting those in need and contributing to various community organizations. His support extended to the Indiana Sheriffs' Association, the NRA (as a lifelong member), Judicial Watch, the NRA Whittington Center, the RBN Republic Broadcast Network, and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

In his later years, Terrence became an avid gardener, finding joy in nurturing the earth and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. He loved old movies, especially westerns and John Wayne films. He cherished kayaking adventures with his sister, or his grandson and daughter when they came to town. Terrence's outdoor adventures created fond memories for his children, teaching them about nature and animals.

Terrence will be remembered for his boundless generosity, love and kindness. His legacy of compassion and community spirit will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
