Donald James DeMong

Donald James DeMong Donald James DeMong, beloved "Mo" to his "Jo," loving dad, father, and "Poopsie," was born Aug. 26, 1928, and died peacefully at UW Madison Hospital on Feb. 17, 2011, surrounded by his family. He married Joan L. Heck on Dec. 26, 1954. He is survived by his wife, Joan; one daughter, Melissa DeMong-Shafer, and her husband, Stuart, of DeWitt, Michigan; and two sons, Mark and Mike, both of Freeport. He attended Aquin High School, was a WWII veteran, attended Loras College, and graduated from Purdue University as a pharmacist in 1954. He was a member of the Jaycees, past president of the Aquin Alumni Association, the Winneshiek Playhouse, the Freeport Catholic School Board, the Northwestern Illinois Pharmacist Assoc., served on the Diocesan Board of Education, was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and a past Grand Knight. He owned and operated Crawford Drug Store in Freeport from 1964 to 1991. His greatest loves were his family, many friends, and fishing for "the Big One" during our family vacations at Lake Kabetogama in MN. Visitation at Schwarz Chapel, 608 S. Park Blvd, Freeport, on Monday, February 21, 2011 and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a mass to follow. Don will be remembered for his sense of humor, his generous nature, and his kind heart. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the KC's Tootsie Roll Drive, c/o George Mowry, 223 W.
