Dorothy Potter Obituary

Dorothy Jean "Dottie" Potter

Dorothy Jean "Dottie" Potter passed away on April 11, 2016 in Bradenton, Florida after a short but courageous battle with ALS.

Dorothy was born July 7, 1927, in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Herbert L. Knapp and Dorothy (Taylor) Knapp.   She graduated from Dimondale High School in 1944, and was married to the late Warren D Potter, Jr. in 1946.  They had 4 children together.  Dorothy worked for the Michigan Dept. of Health for over 20 years, and retired in 1990.  For the last ten years she spent her winters in Bradenton, Florida, but always returned to Lansing for the summers.

Dorothy was a very social and very optimistic person.  Most of her life she was blessed with good health.  She was a world traveler; visiting every continent in the world, save for Antarctica.  Dorothy was an expert Bridge player, and a fiercely competitive game player; whether it be cards or board games, it mattered not.  She always enjoyed entertaining others, and her parties were very popular.  Everyone who knew her loved her.  She will be sadly missed by many friends and family around the globe.

Dorothy is survived by her companion Paul Kemper of Bradenton, FL and Muscatine, IA; children Sue (Steven) Hadden of Vulcan, Michigan; Jerry (Lorraine) Potter, of Bradenton, Florida; Laura Potter of Lansing, Michigan; and Scott (Cappy) Potter of Traverse City, Michigan; her 8 grandchildren, James Hadden, Mark (Erin) Hadden, Angela (Ray) Braithwood, Abigail Potter, Anna Potter, Ashley (Brian) Grafstrom, Kristina (Kyle) Duckworth, and Joseph Potter; and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at 12:30 P.M. in the Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W Saginaw St, Lansing.  The family will receive visitors at noon to 12:30 P.M. Saturday.   Interment will immediately follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 4444 W. Grand River Ave., Lansing.  In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions be sent in Dorothy's name to the ALS Association (www.alsa.org) or other preferred charity.

Remembering again Dorothy's life. She was a devoted employee and fun coworker - I was privileged to work with her.

I smiled when I saw the picture of Dorothy from Legacy.com... I immediately thought of a story she told... how she could travel around and pull over to the side of the road for a 10 minute power nap. Her friend and another coworker Audrey tried it. Went to sleep with in the day time and woke up at night... still makes me chuckle. Dorothy was a great colleague...

I'm glad to see this picture of Dorothy in my inbox and remember again our years with the Crippled Children Program. Robin Orsborn spoke of some of her humorous stories - Dorothy did indeed have a good sense of humor. One time she had some folks from the office over to her home for lunch, as I recall, to see her newly remodeled kitchen. She served ice cream sundaes for dessert. The hot fudge sauce tasted so wonderful, and I asked her if she would mind sharing the recipe. She smiled sweetly (and, in retrospect, with a mischievous sparkle in her eye) and told me that she would be glad to share it with me. The next morning, I found a can of Hershey's hot fudge sauce on my desk. I hope you are sharing many stories and are able to smile as you celebrate her memory.

I just found out about Dorothy's passing. I was saddened by this news. Like Donna, I worked with Dorothy in the early 80's in the "Crippled Children's Program" (we are CC). I have so many fond memories and many humorous stories she told.. Did you know she could write a report while driving? Though I had not seen her in years, she will truly be missed.

I was saddened to hear of Dorothy's passing. I worked with her a number of years at what was then called the Crippled Children Program. She talked about her family often---you were all important to her. Sending my heartfelt condolences.
