Grover George Obituary

Grover Lastron George Haslett Mr. George, age 85, was born in Brewton, Alabama on February 19, 1927 to Berry and Lorene George and went home to be with the Lord on July 15, 2013. Grover was a graduate of his beloved Michigan State University. He was a member of the United States Army. His distinguished Military service included action in the Korean War, World War II, two tours in the Vietnam War, and the Dominican Republic conflict. Grover retired from service in 1968. For his service he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronzed Metal, recognized as a trained Sharp Shooter and H&H, and an honored member of the 82nd Airborne. He also retired from Lansing Public Schools as one of the first African-Americans to hold an administration foreman position. Grover, also known as "Plus" and "Scasy" was a very active member of the distinguished fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Kappa Delta Lambda Chapter. Grover had many interests. Some of these interests included boxing, fishing, hunting, farming, music (jazz), and sports, especially Michigan State Athletics. Though he had many interests, he most loved his family. He especially loved family gatherings. He was a mentor to many and a loyal friend. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Marcel George. Grover is survived by his wife of 52 years, Irene George, whom he called his "Cherry." He is also survived by his children Gedric, Linda (Oscar), John (Angie), and Sabarras (Angelique), his sister Lillian McFadden, his special childhood friend Kate, and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mr. George will lie in repose on Tuesday, July 23, 3- 9 p.m. at the Riley Funeral Home, 426 W. St. Joseph Street, Lansing, MI 48933. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 24, 10 am at Friendship Baptist Church, 2912 Pleasant Grove Road, Lansing, MI, with the family receiving friends 1 hour prior to the service. To my beloved Sister Irene, even though we couldn't get there to mourn your loss of George "The Mayor", as we liked to call him -- just know that we've grieved with you, and have kept you and your family in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

Oh, how we will keep those special days we were together - the phone calls, laughter and humor of "The Mayor" with us forever. He was a "Grade A - Class Act".

Just know that I'm just a phone call away and I will also see you soon.

May God keep you and continue to bless you.

We Love You,

Sister Cheryl and Vernon

Grover, we will certainly all miss you very much. You were one of the best Brothers I encountered during the years when I was a member and later was president of Kappa Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. here in the Lansing, Michigan area. You worked very hard for the Fraternity, and your behind the scenes work and mentoring of minority youth here in our community has affected the lives of many young men (and women) of color in a positive way. One of the best things about your service to our community was that it was sincere - you were always really very interested in people, our kids, and what they were doing or not doing for themselves here in Lansing. I still am amazed at the energy and time you spent in helping to establish the Black Child and Family Institute here in Lansing. I still appreciate your frequent calls to me, asking about me, my family, and especially my children - up until almost the very end. You continued to call me almost up to the very end to share information and concerns about what young people were doing here in Lansing, and what the Brothers of Alpha could and should do to encourage our kids. You left a heavy positive imprint in Black and Gold on our youth involved in the Alpha Esquires and Boy Scout programs, on the young kids enriching their lives at the Black Child and Family Institute and KDL foundation, and also on the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing.

I know you loved your family - especially Ms. Cherry - very much. I know you cared for your Brothers up until the end, and I saw the true devastation you experienced when our beloved Brother Ralph Bonner passed and went into Omega chapter just a month ago...

When I was chapter president, I gladly awarded you one of the very first KDL president's awards at my first opportunity. No one has deserved that more here in Lansing to this date.

Your service to our country in the military in three major wars was most appreciated and inspirational to me and many others. Because of you our country was then and is now safer, and now has a greater hope for becoming an even better country in the future.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes... But in your case, it truly can be said that you are a hero to many who came in a "Plus" size...

Hopefully some other Brother who was inspired by your life and contributions will step up to try to give a bit more to our world, our people, our Brotherhood because of you and your example and encouragement...

Alpha's Omega chapter is blessed at your entry. "Manly deeds, scholarship, Love for all mankind" ... you embodied that. Peace my Brother. Love to your family... I am glad I had an opportunity to give you your yellow roses while you were still alive...
