Hugh Everett "Smitty" Smyth

Hugh Everett Smyth "Smitty" Port Charlotte, FL Hugh Everett Smyth "Smitty", 80, died Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Peace River Medical Center. Born on March 15, 1933 in Lansing, MI to Hugh and Christine (Jones) Smyth. He served in the U.S. Army prior to graduating from Michigan State University and remained an enthusiastic fan of Spartan sports. His long career in Education began as a teacher in Standish Michigan where he met lifelong friend and colleague Patrick O'Keefe. After Standish he taught at Grand Ledge High School where he also coached Varsity Basketball and served as Athletic director. He then became principal at Williamston Middle School, and concluded his career as Superintendent of Pellston Public Schools, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed his home on Burt Lake, hunting, fishing, gardening, golf and any outdoor activities. In recent years, Hugh and Linda spent winters in Port Charlotte, Florida. He is survived by his wife: Linda (Clear) Smyth; one son: Gregory (Theresa) Smyth of Port Charlotte, FL; three daughters: Kelly (Dale) Hibbert of South Lyon, MI; Wendy (Jim) Ingalls of Germantown, TN; Lisa (Mark) Halverson of Okemos, MI; two step-sons: Dennis Phillips of Dundee, MI; Randy Phillips of Oshkosh, WI; two step-daughters: Tina Hessel of Pellston, MI; Yvonne (Nick) Burgess of Ft. Wayne, IN; a brother: Robert Smyth of Haslett, MI and one sister: Malinda Haindel of Charlotte, MI; thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death: James Smyth of Chippewa, MI. A memorial service is planned at the Pellston High School Auditorium, on Saturday December 7, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
