Jane Gottschalk Obituary

Jane Rosenbloom Gottschalk

Okemos - Jane Rosenbloom Gottschalk, lawyer, dog lover, avid collector, cherished wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at 85 on December 2nd, 2018 in Okemos, Michigan. Jane was raised on the south side of Chicago by her mother, Ada Rosenbloom, a golfer, bridge player and champion of liberal causes, and father, Tax Rosenbloom, an ad man. She attended Chicago's Lab School where in the sixth grade she met the man who would eventually become her future husband of 50 years.

After graduating from the University of Chicago in 1952, she moved to New York and worked at CBS. Jane returned to Chicago and worked as an editor at the University of Chicago Press. There she was reacquainted with her grammar school classmate, Dr. Alex Gottschalk. Alex's pioneering work in radiology and nuclear medicine brought the couple and their growing family to California and to Connecticut, where he was on the faculty of the Yale School of Medicine.

In Connecticut, Jane fell in love with Shaker furniture and became a collector. She acquired walking sticks, railroad lanterns, grandfather clocks and antique toys. She was also a fan of Punch and Judy puppetry and folk art.

Jane returned to school in her late 40's, earning a law degree from the University of Connecticut. She practiced real estate and family law. After moving to Okemos, Michigan in 1990, Jane briefly worked for the Attorney General of Michigan.

After her husband died in 2010, Jane found joy bringing her Aussie shepherd, Ava, to visit the Dobie Care senior facilities center near her home.

She is survived by her son, two daughters, five grandchildren, two dogs and her many friends. Donations can be made in Jane's name to either Doctors Without Borders or to Heifer International.
