John Pollard Obituary

John L. Pollard Lansing Beloved husband, father and activist, passed away in the early morning hours of January 25, 2013. John is survived by his wife, Cartis and son, Cayenne. John was passionate about home, family and community, and worked in many positions that benefited various institutions in this city. He was Development Director at Impression 5 Museum, enabling the first dinosaur exhibit to come to town. He was Development Director at Lansing Community College, and a part of the development team at Michigan State University where he also taught grant writing and fund raising. As Director of Black Child & Family Institute, he ran the largest summer program for children in the city. With his friend, Cleveland Henry, he ran the most successful programs (BOLD & GGI) at Everett High School to keep kids in school - and this according to the school's own statistics. He was a charismatic speaker and traveled far and wide to speak to young people. In 2001 he fought almost single handedly against the "billion dollar bond-doggle" of the school district, making the "bond-mobile" a common sight in town. He defeated that bond and saved Lansing citizens millions of dollars. John was also a member of the '65 & '66 back-to-back, undefeated MSU Championship football team. John believed that feelings should be expressed while people were alive to appreciate them, so he wanted no ceremonies at his death. However, if you wish to honor John, attend a City Council meeting, ask questions, make the Council accountable. And while you're there, tell them what John meant to you. If you can't attend a meeting, write a letter or e-mail the council. If there was ever proof that one person can make a difference, it was John Pollard. God Bless his Soul. PEACE. The family is being served by the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Home, Lansing Chapel. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.palmerbush.com.

JP was an important person in my life when I attended MSU and became a member of Omega Psi Phi. I truly regret that, due to illness, I was not able to attend Sigma Chapter's 50th anniversary celebration when I would have had the opportunity to renew my acquaintance with him. Everyone loved JP and so did I. Friendship is Essential to the Soul!

I will never forget JP. He was someone that I admired and looked up to. He taught me many things. Our fraternal bond is one that I will always cherish because, as we believe, friendship is essential to the soul.

Cartis & Cy we have you in our thoughts and prayers at this time of sorrow. John was a very unique person, one of a kind who touched so many with his wisdom and sense of humor, he will be greatly missed. We are always here for you. Love, Ben, Sharon, Alissa, Tyler and Hallie Lycos

JP was my friend, and one of the smartest, wisest and most compassionate people that I have ever known. Couple that with his uncanny and unfettered knack for supporting the "Political Underdog" and you've got our "JP". My Brother, you are loved, well respected and will be sorely missed. To Cardis and Cayenne, from the Dickson Family (Me, Linda, Nya and Roy Jr.), our condolences; and we join you with, and in, your love for JP.

Brother Pollard was someone that I looked up to once I became a member of Omega Psi Phi. He was very cerebral and always willing to help you if you requested his assistance. I am saddened by the fact that I was not able to attend Sigma Chapter's 50th anniversary because I had not seen JP since the mid 70's. I will miss him but know that he is now at peace and in a better place.

February 3, 2013

Cartis and Cy it has been a week since I talked with you and I am still trying to work my way through the news. I have lost a Brother and a friend that goes back to our freshman year at MSU. Langston set the path for a lot of us and we must continue to move the family forward. Be Blessed in this time of loss knowing that the Missions of JP will be addressed by all he touched. God has Blessed us all in sharing him with us. Be strong and encouraged as we have an Angel watching over us.

John Pollard will be very well missed! I've learned so much about him and what he stands for from watching him on City Council! He was a very smart man and always fought for our community and had everything down to the tee. He knew what he was talking about! He was mainly the reason why I watched City Council. He gave me insight on how to vote and what and who to vote for. City Council will not be the same without him. GOD bless him and his family and may he rest in peace!

JP was my MAIN man! I was saddened to learn about his passing because I was on the phone talking to him. He supported Medical Marijuana when others feared to tread. We helped numerous young black males to turn their lives around and pont them in the right direction. Your influence on the young was enormous and you will be missed by me a lot. I am glad u called me back before you made your transition.. Your warrior sprit will live on and I will do my best to see that it happens. Rest in Peace, job done well!

I never had the honor of meeting John Pollard but I always admired the work that he did and the news reports of his activities.

I remember that he had once calculated that taxpayers could save $l million a year just in gasoline costs if the CATA buses waited 20 minutes at each end of their routes. The CATA Director replied that they couldn't do that because they had to pay the drivers whether they were driving or not--totally oblivious to the fact that by waiting, they would not only need fewer drivers, but also fewer buses saving millions more in capital costs and payroll.

Whenever we see a CATA bus I think of John and ask my wife to check to see if the bus has more passengers or drivers.

How much better off we all would be if men like John Pollard could be found to serve in public office.

How blessed are all of those who knew him, worked with him, or who learned from him.

May God forever bless and cherish his good and faithful servant!

John or JP,
It just can't be true! My brother, you had so much more to do! Oh, say it isn't so. Brother your passion was so intense at times that it frightened me. You were one of the real shakers and movers that all people should get to know. You motivated many people to strive for fairness and justice on so many issues. Your love of youth was always apparent. As the old folks say, If there is any consolation, your in a better place, but if it isn't right, I am sure that you will speak up! I will miss you for now, but I am sure we will work together again in the scheme of things. Love and respect to your family. And may God bless them.

Lansing has a softer voice now that our "city warrior" is resting forever. His family and friends are in my continued prayers

January 29, 2013

I am sorry to hear of the passing of John. He was always supportive of the senior citizens especially the Senior Corps programs. He was the main speaker at a RSVP recogntion luncheon at the University Club. He talked about a community raising a child especially his Grandmother raising him. It was great like he lead his life to be courageous and fight for what he believed. It is the communities loss. Thank you for sharing him.

Dear John,
I never got to know you personally but I felt that you were my kindred spirit. I loved how to tried to make city council toe the line. To me you were like John the Baptist crying in the wilderness. Lansing has truly lost a TRUE warrior. May you rest in peace.
Who will come forth to pick up the reigns. Surely there will never be another John Pollard,

Things will definitely be a bit less interesting now in the Lansing area. Great to have known you, John.

January 28, 2013

I will always remember peeking around in the yard when I was a little girl to get a glimpse of what John was up to, and our many conversations when I came home to visit. My visits home will not be the same without chatting with JP, Cool #1. John was a unique person, and offered the gift of hope and motivation to many who needed it. Caye and Cartis, I hope you can find peace during this time. -Stephenie Bruce & Family
