Leonard Berkey Obituary

Leonard George Berkey

Our beloved husband, brother, father, and grandpa, Len Berkey, passed away on August 3rd, 2020, at the age of 73. "Lenny" was born in Charleston, West Virginia on March 3, 1947 and grew up in Washington, Pennsylvania. There, he met the love of his life, Ramona Vezie, when they were only fourteen years old. Len graduated from Trinity High School in 1965 and went on to attend Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Len and Ramona married in the Fall of 1968 before Len's graduation from Colgate in 1969. He attended Union Theological Seminary in New York City, 1969-71, and then Michigan State University where he received his Masters degree in 1974 and continued his studies to earn a PhD in Sociology. Len and Ramona's only child, daughter Erin, was born in 1973.

Len spent his career teaching at Albion College, in Albion, MI. He was a beloved professor, advisor, and colleague for 35 years, where he also served as the Chair of the Department of Anthropology & Sociology. Len and Ramona lived in East Lansing Michigan until 2014. After moving to Tacoma, Washington to be near family, Len taught Sociology for two years at University of Washington, Tacoma, where he would continue to support students in their learning for social justice.

Teaching was Len's passion. He also loved to be with his family, to travel, go to movies and concerts, have family game nights, visit museums, and watch British detective series as well as "This Old House" and HGTV. Len enjoyed gardening, shopping, and working out at the YMCA.

During his many years as a professor at Albion, Len taught courses about Race and Ethnicity and challenged his students to think deeply about social issues. He helped many white students come to an understanding of white privilege and was a significant ally for black students and other students of color. Len won many teaching awards and earned many distinctions. After retiring from Albion, he continued teaching at UW Tacoma where many of his students were active or post-military or children of immigrants.

Len's parents were George and Geraldine Berkey. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ramona, his daughter Erin, sister Trudy, granddaughters Rio, Kalea, and Yuri, son-in-law Kensuke, and grandson-in-law Taka. He leaves behind a legacy that is incalculable.

Due to the SARS Cov2 pandemic, no services will be held at this time. A memorial service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Len and Ramona Berkey Scholarship at Albion College, 611 E. Porter St., Albion, MI 49224 (517-629-1000).

I bet you didn´t know, Len and I went to Second Christian church. We were in a Christmas pageant when we were very young. He was Joseph and I was Mary. I think of that every year at Christmas.

Len and I developed our shared passion for teaching - including teaching about race and supporting students of color - while in grad school together at Michigan State. He was a good friend and a supportive colleague. I am sure that his legacy endures in the many students he deeply affected and empowered. I will always cherish our formative years together.

Len was a great friend and colleague at Michigan State when we were in graduate school together. We shared a developing passion for college teaching and apparently led parallel academic lives in terms of our shared devotion to enlightening and supporting students as we facilitated their awareness of social justice and racial equity. I'm sure that his loss leaves a hole in the hearts of the many students he touched, but most of all in the hearts of Ramona and Erin. Peace.

I know that I wouldn't be the person I am today - and I certainly wouldn't have chosen the career I did - without the teachings, mentoring, and support of Dr. Berkey. He had a tremendous impact on me at Albion, and he was the one who introduced me to Sociology, and he nurtured my sense of social justice. We miss you, and my thoughts are with your family and Ramona. Thank you for sharing your life with me, Dr. Berkey

A good friend and colleague throughout graduate school. It was an honor to know him and to share his passion for teaching, especially about diversity and urban issues.

Dr Berkey was incredibly influential in my choice to be a combined Sociology and Biology major at Albion College. In his classes, we were taught the framework to ask the difficult questions and the tools to provide some possible solutions. He introduced our class to the Urban Life Center in Chicago and my experiences in Chicago profoundly impacted my life. I am so very grateful he was a professor at Albion. I am very sorry for your loss.

Dr. Berkey was one of the pillars of my education at Albion, together with Mary Collar and Myron Levine they open the door, encouraged me And provides the space to fully explore my interest in social justice and community development. I’m eternally grateful, especially in in times like these where there is such social awakening, that I Was introduced to the concepts like white privilege and fragility early on in my life. Len always asked the right questions.

Dr. Berkey was my Honors Thesis Chair at Albion College and a huge mentor to me. He nurtured the growing sense of social justice in me, leading me to spend 9 months studying at the Urban Life Center in Chicago and then 6 months in South Africa. When I arrived in the US for college after growing up overseas, I was a passionate but confused Third Culture Kid. Dr. Len took me under his wing, helped me learn about the birth-country I didn't grow up in, and gave me skills for a lifetime of inquisitiveness, a love for sociology, and the urge to question everything. I have been working in international development for the last 20 years because of Dr. Len's influence. He touched so many lives in so many powerful and important ways. Sending my condolences to Ramona and his whole family. Thank you for sharing him with us for so many years.

I taught in Albion's Anthro/ Soc Dept from 1987-1992 with Len. How fortunate I was to be in a dept with Len, and Liz Brumfiel in those early years of my career! Len brought a brightness to everyday interactions with his joy in people's uniqueness, his playful humor, and his kindly sociological insights into human frailty. Many a tedious faculty meeting was made bearable by the twinkle in Len's eye and his wry, sane commentary. He approached big ethical questions with rigor and compassion. He powered through difficult challenges with a lot of hard work and unflinching honesty. I always imagined that I'd be able to see him again. Sending love and blessings to Ramona and their family at this time of great sadness. May there be joy in the memories!

I was a student of Len’s at Albion College in the mid 1980’s. He was and always will be one of my favorite and most influential teachers and mentors. Len saw something in me as a young man and encouraged me to join a semester abroad in Europe that he was leading. That trip, the people I met, the things that happened to us and the mentorship of Len Berkey changed the course of my life.
