Maggie Miller Obituary

Maggie Miller East Lansing The greatest gift one human being can give to another is a belief in his or her potential. During her life, Maggie Miller gave this gift to thousands of Michigan students. She was a legendary counselor, compassionate educator and advocate of college for many who never considered it until she came into their lives. Maggie died Nov. 2, 2008. She was 56. Margaret Frances Miller was born in Battle Creek in 1952 to two educators, Frances and Charles Miller. Her career in education began in 1974. She taught at Harbor Springs High School and served as a guidance counselor at Dewitt High School and then Okemos High School until 2006, when ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) forced her to retire. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Michigan State University. She is survived by her husband, Stan Soffin of East Lansing; her sister and brother-in-law, Marty and Hank Cupp and her niece and nephew, Emily and Ryan Cupp, all of Ludington. Also surviving are her three step-daughters, Anne Soffin, Katie (Soffin) Smith and Emily (Soffin) Dove-Medows, all originally of East Lansing; and several cousins. "Ms. Miller," as she was affectionately called, possessed a superabundance of energy, humor, empathy and understanding that endeared her to her students, co-workers and her multitude of friends. In 2006, The Maggie Miller Kind Hearted Scholarship was established through the Capital Region Community Foundation. The fund is designed to assist college-bound students at Okemos High School who give back to their communities by unselfishly helping others. For two decades, she served the professional associations devoted to student advising and college admissions, winning many awards. In 2007, the Michigan Association for College Admissions Counseling (MACAC) presented her with the Gramenz Award, its highest honor. The College of Education at Michigan State University awarded her the Crystal Apple Award in 2007 for her excellence in and commitment to her profession. Recently, the Maggie Miller Scholarship was established through MACAC as a tribute to her lifetime of contributions to college admissions counseling. Her letters of recommendation were legendary among college admission officers, who often commented on the originality, humor, personal detail and thoroughness of the carefully-crafted letters. She consistently said that character and service combined with achievement and integrity were paramount to college success. Maggie was inundated with invitations to attend her students' high school graduation parties. She attended almost every one, arriving with a handwritten and personalized congratulations card, based on her relationship with that student. Memorial contributions may be made to the Maggie Miller Kind Hearted Scholarship, c/o Capital Region Community Foundation, 6025 Executive Drive, Lansing, MI, 48911; or the Motor Neuron Disease Center Fund, Department of Neurology, 1324 Taubman Center, 1500 E. Medical Center Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0322. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Marriott University Place in East Lansing. The dress code will be the colors of the rainbow.

Ms. Miller was a great person. She would light up any room she was in. I would have not made it threw High School without her. I saw her a few years ago and she still remembered me after 13 years. She was a very memorable person and she will not be forgotten. We now all have a special angel in heaven.

Ms. Miller was an instrumental mentor, role model and friend. I remember her first day at DeWitt High School. Her infectious smile lit up the auditorium. You wanted to get to know her. She believed in and had expectations for her students, always encouraging and approachable. She would always beam when referring to "Stan the Man". What a special treasure....
Dear Stan and family - I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

If I had to pick a role model, or an icon that inspired everyone at Okemos High School, including myself, it would be Mrs.Miller, no doubt about it. We miss you Mrs.Miller and will never forget you.

My budget in Home & Family Living was color-coded. She told me later that she used it in years to come as an example. I was her student in 1986-7 at Harbor Springs High School. You could ask her ANYTHING and she would give you an honest answer. Her smile was literally ear-to-ear! She will be missed by many.

Maggie, we will miss you dearly. Your positive attitude and cheerful personality were something that set you apart from most people. The fact that young people were influenced by your tremendous traits made it even better. All of us from the Harbor Springs Class of 1977 will always remember you fondly.

When I first joined MACAC and became involved as a volunteer, it was "hanging out" with Maggie Miller at the local and national conferences and events that was a highlight. - Her twinkling eyes, brilliant smile and sense of fun made me and everyone who was with her feel as though they were in the best place possible.
Bless you Maggie and thanks!!

My Prayers are with Ms. Miller's Family and close friends. My heart sank when I heard of her struggles and passing. She was truly a beautiful person who touched so many of our lives in the Harbor Springs Community. I am also a former student and was blessed with being able to know her. Her personality was infectious to anyone around her, and you could feel her energy when you were in the same room. Every day provided a new adventure when I had Ms. Miller in class whether it was her humor, words of "Maggie" wisdom, or her passion for teaching.
Ms. Miller left Harbor Springs High School at the end of my junior year, and I clearly remember how she broke the news. We tried real hard to convince her to stay until my class graduated. Her response was simply stated that no year was the perfect year to leave because she loved each and every one of the students and staff - there would always be a special group of students graduating.
Without trying to sound too repetitive, Ms. Miller was truly a "one of a kind" teacher. She will be fondly remembered by thousands of students who she has left a permanent mark on. I am honored to have known her.

Maggie adopted me and loved me as her son and I was honored to play that role. She was always my #1 supporter and was a kindred spirit. Her passion for life and those around her was contagious. She handled her health challenge with grace and taught all of us to "never give up". I'm a better person because my path crossed with Ms. Miller. Her legacy lives on in all of us!

Ms. Miller was one of a kind. She always held a special place in her heart for all her students. Ms. Miller made my 4-years at DHS easier and certainly more memorable. It's not everyday that a teacher has that kind of an impact on her students.

I am honored to have been able to call you my friend.
May you rest in peace Maggie and may your spirit soar.

With always a way to brighten my day,
even if it was just the smile on your face.
When a problem arose you stood tall on your toes,
To reach my ear and free me from my woes.
You saw the hope when few had faith,
Rekindled the fire I had beneath.
I know our Lord, God, has you now,
still doing the same among the clouds...

Thank you for all you have done and all you have touched... Dustin R. Lopez

Although I hadn't seen Maggie for many years, her vitality, humor, and compassion remain in my memory. She made an impact on so many lives. Her open, caring manner welcomed everyone to join in her pure joy of living. My condolences to her family and to the world which is a sadder place with this loss. If I could, I'd be at her memorial wearing every color of the rainbow.

Maggie and I were teachers during the same era in Harbor Springs. Maggie was such a breath of fresh air! Always upbeat, fun-loving and totally committed to her students and community. I was young and new to teaching and although we taught in different buildings and at different levels, her enthusiasm and energy permeated the entire staff and school system. The atmosphere in which we worked was positive, fun, and focused largely in part to her influence. I am not surprised that she went on to impact so many lives, both young and old. I am saddened that we all have lost such an extraordinary individual, but heartened to know that her legacy will live on in each of us who were lucky enough to know her.

Maggie was such a gift to all that had the pleasure of experiencing her humor, friendship, guidance and the love that she shared with everyone, unconditionally. I had Ms. Miller as a teacher in Harbor Springs in the mid 70's and will always remember the laughter. Her courage and love of life will never be forgotten.

Dear Stan and family,
What a blessing for Maggie to have you each in her life, especially as she faced her last challenge. What a comfort for all of us whose lives she touched through her long and distinguished professional career to know that she had such incredible love, strength and support in her life for so many years.
Maggie inspired generations of students through her persistent, patient and unflagging belief in the power of each individual to be his/her personal best. We pay tribute to her every day, whether through the professions we entered because she believed in us and pushed us toward our goal (or wrote us one of those famous letters of reference), through the choices we make every day as adults and parents ("life is not a dress rehearsal, so make a good choice" was one of my favorite Maggie lines from Harbor Springs High School), through the Maggie-isms that pepper our speech (who can forget "cool jets" or "snot rocks" exclamations), and mostly because we were blessed to have a non-familial adult who loved us unconditionally at a time in our lives when we needed it the most (late teenage years when we were each busy individuating, another Maggie-ism).
People like Maggie come along once in a generation. She was a true powerhouse. How incredibly blessed I feel to have had her in my life. Everything I needed to know to be a responsible, productive, loving adult I learned in Maggie's class. Thank you for sharing her with all of us, her students. We appreciated her more than we can ever possibly express.
God bless.

Maggie Miller was a true gift to this world, and all that met her. You often hear of someone having the ability to "light up a room" when they enter, and she brought real truth to that statement! As a DeWitt High School graduate - 1999 - she still remains one of my fondest memories from that time. Ms. Miller - you will be missed, but not forgotten.

Ms. Miller was a great couselor, she made me feel relaxed the second I stepped into her room. One of the things I remember the most is all the little toys, books, and papers that cluttered the room and gave it a homey feel. Always fun and helpful I know the world will miss her.

Maggie Miller was an amazing counselor and friend to all her students. She was very important to my children when they attended DeWitt High School. I remember when she got her new VW Beetle and she let students hop in and drive it around the parking lot. She was a very giving and fun loving person. She is sure to brighten up her space in heaven.

The world became a richer place the day Maggie Miller was born. And for those of us who had this whirlwind of a woman cross our path, we will be forever changed. We definitely laughed more and we learned to care more. In the end we cried more but only because we had the blessing of knowing and loving her. Mags...you are missed.
