Michael Spenny Obituary

Michael (Mike) Timothy Spenny

Michael (Mike) Timothy Spenny, 58, left his earthly home on January 2, 2021 and is now in the loving arms of Jesus, His Lord and Savior. Mike left behind an extended loving family. Wife, Mary Sue Spenny, his forever loving mother, Sharron Spenny, father and stepmother, Harry and Brenda Spenny. Son Derek, (Alexis) Spenny, grandson Mason and daughter Bailey Spenny (Tyler), grandson Easton and granddaughter Kinsleigh. Mike was the oldest of 3 siblings and leaves his loving sister, Theresa Spenny and brother Jeffrey Spenny. Stepchildren, Brent (Allison) Carlson, Sam Carlson, and Abby (Shaine) Kimball.

Mike was born on May 26, 1962 in Lansing, Michigan. Mike attended Holt High School where he was very involved in cross country track and playing in the high school band. He would often point out the ares near Holt where he had ran during practice. After graduating high school he went on to earn a degree in Information Technology. This was an area for which he excelled in. Mike landed a position with the State of Michigan in Lansing and spent the following 24 years working in multiple IT departments there. He also worked vigorously at home taking online classes at Liberty University earning a degree in Christian Counseling. This was something that he had hoped to use in his later years, perhaps after retirement.

After moving to Ada, Michigan in 2012, he felt a calling to work for a Christian Company and began a new IT position at Family Christian Bookstores Headquarters in Grand Rapids. Ultimately Mike was presented with an IT position where he was fortunate enough to work from home. Although his fellow employees worked from all over the United States, they all felt like family as they were in constant communication online. Mike loved the fact that his skills were being further tested in the new age of using The Cloud and the development of apps, new software, etc. At times he traveled to renowned companies to work with their employees on improving their current software, as well as offering his support to help their jobs run more efficiently.

Mike will be missed immensely by his close knit group of co-workers who truly admired him. Owners, Martin and Julie have felt a such a loss on their team. They truly consider their employees to be their extended "family". Their empathy for Mike's family is and has been unsurpassed.

Mike never lost his love for running and would often be found running along Thornapple River Drive in Ada which reminded him so much of his high school cross country days. The pine trees and small hills, along the river reminded him of his childhood summer memories where he traveled with his family to the Grayling area. He spoke so many times about how as youngsters they would lay on the ground after dark and gaze at the stars in the sky for hours. What an awesome memory to have that stayed with him for life.

Mike was beyond blessed to be a huge part of Derek and Bailey's lives while they grew up. He cherished any time spent with them from the day they were born, whether it be coaching Derek's hockey team or attending Bailey's dance recitals. As they both grew into adulthood and became parents themselves, Mike could not have been more proud of their own parental instincts that could be noted from a mile away.

A lovable man gone too soon. We can find peace in Mike's zest for life while here on earth, concert goer, hockey coach, hockey player and hockey fan, black belt master, martial arts teacher, steak and fries eater, and craft beer "taste tester" (which is a must when you live in the Beer City Capital). Reading scripture and memorizing verses was Mike's most relaxing passing time. This is where he found his biggest comfort. For He knew the plans that are made for Our journey here on earth. Christian music was also a large part of his daily enjoyment. Matthew West, Chris Tomlin, Jeremy Camp, and Casting Crowns to name a few. Seeing Lauren Daigle twice in concert in 2019 & 2020 gave "Down to earth real life" to an entirely different meaning. Listen to any of these Christian Artists as a tribute to Mike.

Mike's family has chosen to hold a gathering this summer in an area where Mike loved the most. They will celebrate his life here on earth, (as well as wish upon one of those favorite stars Mike gazed at as a child). Mike will forever be held in the hearts of so many along with the different memories he made with each life he touched. In lieu of flowers, Mike donated monthly to The Exodus Road. This organization was founded in 2011 made up of trained operatives. Ordinary heroes who have a proven track record of over 1,431 rescues and 739 trafficker arrests. Mike would find comfort in any small donation made to them. (exodusroad.com)

We are so so sorry to hear of your loss. Mike seemed like an incredible, generous man and I know he will be deeply, deeply missed.

My husband and I founded The Exodus Road, the organization which Mike was donating to, and I just wanted to say from all of us to all of you that we are grateful for his place in our community of supporters. His generosity impacted freedom for the most vulnerable.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you grieve the loss of, but celebrate the life of, Mike in the coming days and months.

With love,

I worked with Michael the past three years and he was terrific to have on our team. Michael was always going the extra mile for the project and the customers, they loved having his often mild and understanding responses that had detailed answers. He was an example of a caring individual. I always enjoyed speaking with him about projects, his love of all things Michigan and discussing his local beer "Founders". He will be missed by all of his colleagues and the loss for us is great. May his spirit be in heaven and may all his loved one's be comforted by God's love.

I'm so very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. We worked together for MDHS, and he was a quiet, but strong leader who looked after his team. Also, our sons played hockey together. His family is in my prayers. Godspeed on your journey, Mike.

Mike was an outstanding human being I trained with him and also taught classes at the Mid-Michigan Academy of Martial Arts. He was fun to workout with and train. I kinda lost touch with him over the years. And I'm deeply saddened by his loss. My condolences to his family. May God continue to bless you.

Grief can be so heart wrenching and so different for each of us. We must hold on to the priceless memories that each of us hold of time(s) spent with Mike, for no one can take those away from any of us.
For me it was the simple times that meant the most. Our silly goofball laughter as we watched the same movies again and again will always be one of my cherished memories. Looking forward to our favorite TV shows twice weekly made us both giddy. The simpler the better, as long as we shared the couch at the same time, that’s all that mattered to me.
One memory that really stuck with Mike was when we were baptized in Lake Lansing in 2009 by Pastor Brandon Bruce from Faith Church. God Bless that event for Mike rededicated his life To The Lord with all of his body! Praise! We can all rest in Peace knowing that Mike is in Heaven. Of course that doesn’t take away our sorrow, our wanting to know why a spouse, a son, a father, stepfather, a grandfather, a brother, uncle, friend, and so on, is no longer with us. #TrustInHisWays
Forever in my heart, xo marts.
