Phil, we so very much miss your gentle and kind ways. The family carries on in new marriages and Grandchildren expanding your legacy. Love to you always.

A year later, alas, we find ourselves during a time of governmental chaos, confusion, and Constitutional conflict. I am glad and proud to say I knew one person who could clarify it all - my Professor and friend - Phil. Your knowledge was profound and your sharing of it saintly, for it was without ego and for the betterment of all those willing to listen and learn. Thoughts of you remain in my heart and my best wishes and prayers will always be for Mary and your family. Tony Paruk 10/02/20 Chandler

It just doesn't seem like a year has come and gone since your passing. The family continues to forge ahead
because of the groundwork you laid. Yours and Mary's children have grown into such fine young people. Your Grand Rapids family is so proud of you for all of your care, camaraderie, and expert advice when solicited. We hoist one in your memory, saluting you always, dear Phil.

There once was a Con Law professor from Cooley.
He was simply the best - no fooling.
He won so many Beatty Teaching awards.
And his excellence is now home, with our Lord.

A wonderful professor but even better dad.
The loss of this man leaves us all sad.
He was a brilliant man, intellectually bright!
And after his stroke he put up a great fight.

A terrible affliction, one's health in mutiny.
But he taught us about the test of strict scrutiny.
So many principles he taught so well.
None of our rights would he ever want quelled.

Suspect classifications and the right to free speech,
His connection with students, he was ordained to teach.
Life unfortunately has a substantive due process.
It happens to us all, we must confess.

He taught about the rule of content neutrality.
And the Lord taught us about our own mortality.
Phil was given great talent, special gifts.
But the sands of time we all will sift.

Thank you dear friend, husband and Professor.
His waning health is no longer a stressor.
At peace he is now, forevermore.
Not a finer man, that's for sure.

My sincerest condolences to Mary and your family.

Sorry for your loss, I had him at Cooley Law school. He was a great Constitutional Law Professor.

My life has been blessed by being related to Phil. I truly know him to be one of the kindest individuals always making time for anyone anywhere. We did have a couple of opportunities to discuss constitutional issues. His knowledge was immense and spot on with different discussions. I will always miss his gentlemen qualities and total devotion to family. We love you Phil and will admire you forever. Safe travels my friend. Love, Buck and Debbie.
