Richard Alward Obituary

Richard L. Alward

East Lansing - Richard Lloyd Alward, 84, went home to glory Friday, May 3, 2019. He was born August 21, 1934 in Eagle, MI the son of Luther and Lucy (Watson) Alward. Richard started working at Motor Wheel while still in high school. Soon after, he began a 38 year career at General Motors. He enjoyed playing basketball and softball in his younger years but his primary job was being a husband, dad, grandpa and friend. Richard was a very social person and once you met him you were a friend. Anyone that knew Richard knew that they were special to him. His unconditional love was a reflection of the Christ he so adored. Richard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Janet (Densteadt); his children, Dawn (Jack) Brown, Richard J. (Stephanie) Alward, Valerie (Patrick) Mertz and Sandra Brettrager; thirteen grandchildren and too many great grandchildren to keep track of. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at Graham Church 7320 Beard Rd. Perry, MI 48872. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10:00 AM until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Special Olympics Area 28, 10100 Williams Rd., DeWitt, MI 48820. The family was assisted with these arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Dear Mrs. Alward,
It's been a lot of years but I remember Mr. Alward's beautiful smile and his gentle way like it was yesterday. The two of you opened your home and your hearts to us and always seemed happy to see us and catch up on things. Whenever you stopped by you and Dad and Mom could sit down and talk about so many things! Even though the two of you and Dad and Mom lost touch in recent years, you always remained special friends and we'll never forget that! It means so much!
Dawn, Rick, Jane and Sandy, Where have the years gone? Your Dad, your Mom, and all of you will always be like family! That's how it always was, and so it is. Love you guys, Until we meet again.

Aunt Janet, Dawn, Rick, Val, Sandy and family. It is with a heavy heart that I write these words. Uncle Dick, was without a doubt the kindest man I have ever known. Whenever we met, he would take the time to have a quiet conversation offering encouragement and advice. I listened intently to every word as he spoke with that twinkle in his eye and slight grin. I held him in the highest regard and will miss him greatly.

As you remember your love one, as God heals your broken hearts (Psalm 147:3), may your cherished memories continue to bring you peace, comfort, and strength to endure.

I've know Dick since we were kids and lived on Angle Rd in Bath, he used to come to my house as I had a sliding hill to slide down in the winter, and we went to school at Bath in the same grade all through school. he will be missed by all he was truly a great person to know and be known by. Sincerely Alice Jean Loomis,
