Susan Thome

Carson City - Sue passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at her home with family by her side. She was 57. Sue was born April 11, 1961 in Birmingham, England to Arthur "John" and Barbara (Cox) McKewan. She moved with her family to Rockford, IL, in 1971 and later to Rochester Hills, MI. Sue trained to be a dressage Instructor at Porlock Vale Equitation Center in Porlock, England. She later graduated from the Veterinary Technician Program at Michigan State University. She married Michael Joseph Thome on September 13, 1986 in East Lansing, MI. She worked at Abbott Road Animal Clinic while Mike completed his education. They then moved to Greencastle, PA, and Sue served as Executive Director of Antietam Humane Society. She also taught dressage at Bit-O-Luck Farm near Gettysburg, PA. Upon the family's return to Michigan, Sue managed the family veterinary practice. She also envisioned and built WinterSpring Farm, where she trained horses and taught dressage. She earned many ribbons and won some medals along the way. Sue believed in the people around her, was honest to her core, and never veered from pursuing her goals. She didn't quite make it to the Grand Prix ring, but she got darn close on self-trained horses. Sue is survived by her husband; children, Elizabeth, Ted, and Belinda; her grandchildren; father John; brother, Andrew (Jane) McKewan; sister, Caroline (Clifton) Johnson; and mother-in-law, Mary-Ellen Thome. She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara; father-in-law, Walter Thome; and brother-in-law, Mark (Virginia) Weber. We will be celebrating Sue's life at WinterSpring Farm on Saturday June 9, 2018, at 2 pm. Please join us to share some memories, some tears and to enjoy some good food in Sue's honor.
