Edgar Watson Obituary

Edgar Eugene Gene Watson BROWNWOOD-Edgar Eugene Gene Watson died peacefully at the age of 86 with his family by his side on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at the Abilene Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Brownwood, Texas, with inurnment to follow at the Church of the Good Shepherd Columbarium. Gene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan; son, Joel and daughter-in-law, Roxanne, of Littleton, Colo.; son, Tomas Townsend of Durango, Colo.; as well as many close friends and relatives. Gene was a mentor to many and a friend to all. He was quick with a smile and always willing to give all he had. Gene truly enjoyed life to the fullest and relished each day he had on earth. He was an active member of his church, serving on its board for many years. Born July 16, 1926, in Haskell County, Texas, he graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1943. He volunteered for service in WWII, serving proudly in the US Marine Corps. After returning from service in the South Pacific, he met and married his wife, Joan, in Brownfield, Texas, in 1952, later moving to Lubbock, Texas, where he founded A-1 Glass Company, which he owned and operated until 1988, at which time he and Joan moved to Brownwood, Texas. After a brief retirement, he started A-1 Window Company, which he was still actively operating up until the time of his passing. Gene was an avid hunter as well as a dedicated bowler, having bowled in over 30 USBC National Bowling tournaments, always bowling with his team/best friends from Brownwood. He was also a founding father of the American Bowling Congress Youth Bowling Programs in the 1960s, serving as the president. Gene was lifelong Texas Tech and Dallas Cowboys fan and rarely missed a game. Gene was preceded in death by one son, Rodney G. Watson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Church of the Good Shepherd Discretionary Fund or the charity of your choice. I just recently learned of Gene passing as I was talking about him to a window company looking to do business with us. Gene was a class act always thinking outside the box and could draw the most explicit and accurate detail drawings on the back of a napkin. He was one of a kind and left a huge void in the industry.
I will miss him dearly.

I was sorry to learn of Gene's passing. I had the privilege of working for Gene, Joan, Rodney and Joel for many years at A-1 Glass. Gene had a big heart, and he gave so many young men the opportunity to learn the glass business. I pray that God holds the family close as they journey through their feelings of loss and sadness.

Joan, Joel and Roxanne - Words are so inadequate when it comes to Gene. He was a best friend, a mentor and sometimes Dad to me. Working with him in the window business through the years has made me realize how fortunate I have been to know such a man. Gene will definitely be missed. May you continue to feel God's presence in the coming days. You are in our prayers and thoughts..

Thinking about you Joan,Joel & Roxanne. Gene was one of the coolest dads that I knew of. The times Joel & myself as well as many other friends that stayed at the lake cabin, were some of the best!! Gene & Joan were a big part of the good times! Your family will be in my Prayers.

Sorry to hear of Gene's passing. I was fortunant to know and work for Gene at the glass company in Lubbock. (I was Janice Newton at that time.) Those years are special to me. He taught me so much during that time. He never put limitations on what I could learn in regard to the business. That was very helpful in the rest of my professional life. Have thought of you guys fondly through the years. You will be in my prayers.

I was so sorry to hear of Gene's death. He was always such a special and kind friend to my dad, Ralph Montgomery, in Lubbock. They had a close working relationship in construction, as well. He always called when he was in Lubbock, and sometimes from wherever he was. He was really a very, very special person.
