ANTHONY CARTER Obituary

ANTHONY CARTER, M.D. Anthony Joseph Carter, M.D. passed away peacefully among family April 14, 2017. Dr. Carter was born May 9, 1930, to Dr. James and Elizabeth (Dillon) Carter in Merrick, N.Y. He was married to Martha Carter and, together, they had three children, LizBeth Carter, Jim (Janeen) Carter and Christopher Carter, all who survive him. Dr. Carter is also survived by his wife, of 40 years, Charlene (Agron) Carter, and her children Marci (Robert) Murdock and Ron (Jen) Rubin, along with seven grandchildren, Sydney Murdock, Peyton Carter, Giovanna DeChirico, Zachary Murdock, Quinn Carter, Drake Carter and Jaxson Rubin; and his two brothers, Rev. James C. Carter, S.J. of New Orleans, La., and Dr. John (Jack) F. Carter and his family of St. Louis, Mo. Dr. Carter graduated from St. Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, Miss., where he excelled in sports and music. He earned his undergraduate degree from Loyola University-New Orleans in 1951 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Louisiana State University Medical School in 1955. Dr. Carter completed his pediatric internship at Charity Hospital-New Orleans in 1956, after which he proudly served as a doctor in the U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged in 1959 at the rank of Captain. Upon his return from overseas service, he completed his pediatric residency at New Orleans' Charity Hospital in 1961. Dr. Carter came to Las Vegas in 1961 serving as the Las Vegas valley's first full-time emergency room physician at Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital, now UMC. He opened his private pediatric practice in 1962. Dr. Carter would later become the hospital's longest-running Chief of Staff, serving from 1976-1981. Considered by many to be one of the founding fathers of the early Las Vegas medical community, Dr. Carter led by example. He was president of the Clark County Medical Society in 1969 and served on the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners from 1976-1984. Dr. Carter was the Chief of Pediatrics for Southwest Medical Associates (SMA) from 1982 until he retired in 1998. During that time, he was also Medical Director of SMA and a highly respected board member of Health Plan of Nevada. Dr. Carter saw no religious, racial or ethnic boundaries and provided care to children in need, often free of charge. Dr. Carter was an avid golfer and spent much of his time sharing his love of skiing with his family and friends. He enjoyed concerts, classical music and playing the piano. His retirement years were filled with the joys and happiness of traveling the world and spending time with his family. Dr. Carter will be fondly remembered and forever missed. A celebration of Dr. Carter's life will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, 3050 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89107. The family requests any memorial donations be made to Three Square Food Bank.

Tony's quiet gentle presence at our family gatherings will be missed more than he could ever imagine. It was an honor to have known such a man--a good one, too soon taken from us. We'll see you in heaven one day, Tony. You're in God's Good Hands.

During this time of great sorrow I hope you find comfort in that "just a little while longer and "death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

May 7, 2017

To all of Tony's loving family, we are thinking of you at this difficult time. He was a longtime friend and contemporary and we will miss seeing his familiar face at so many occasions, as well as in Park City. Fondest good wishes, Carol and Leonard Raizin
