Charles Gray Obituary

CHARLES GRAY III Charles "Charley" Gray III, 78, of Henderson, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family July 28, 2011, after a year long battle with colon cancer. He was born Oct. 21, 1932, in Augusta, Ga., to Charles Gray Jr. and Marion Boyer Gray. Charley, along with his sister, Judith Godfrey (deceased), were raised in Nutley, N.J. He was a proud "Scotchman," the son of a pro-golfer and the grandson of a golf club maker from St. Andrews Scotland. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1952-1956, where he was the head cook on an icebreaker on the Great Lakes. Charley was married to his loving wife, Patricia Gray, for 40 years. They and their family lived in Marietta, Ga., for 33 years prior to moving to Nevada in 2004. Charley was a dedicated husband and father who had careers in the construction and food service industries and most recently, although retired, worked as a school crossing guard. He was an avid sports fan who loved his UNC Tarheels, Atlanta Braves, and all things golf. He loved to travel, especially for family vacations. He also loved playing in his fantasy football league with his children and grandchildren and actually won the league champion in 2010. Charley is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Janice O'Brien, Loreen O'Brien, Kerri Beaulieau, Colin Gray and Marian Ito, as well as Curtis Gray and Jordan Wakeland; and 11 loving grandchildren, who were central to his life. The memorial service for Charles will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at Davis Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89119. A celebration of life gathering will follow the service at Marian Ito's home, 1758 Clear River Falls Lane, Henderson. The Gray family requests that, in lieu of flowers, you consider making a donation to Nathan Adelson Hospice, in appreciation for the wonderful care and support they provided. Charley and I were close friends in the Coast Guard and met again in Chapel Hill, N.C., after the service. I tried many times in recent years to track him down, but failed until I just now found his obituary.
He was a great friend, a loyal shipmate and a wonderful guy. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
