DEAN ROBERTS Obituary

DEAN ROBERTS Dean Roberts, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Nov. 5, 2015, at the age of 85. Dean was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Salt Lake City, to Walter and Florence "Flossy" Osborne Roberts. Dean grew up in Salt Lake City, where he attended Garfield Elementary School, Irving Jr. High School and graduated from South High School in 1947. Although he was very good in track, particularly the high jump, Dean decided to forgo the sport and pursue a different route, joining the South High Acappela choir. Dean had a beautiful baritone voice and was asked by his choir instructor to become a part of the Innerchoir, a choir that performed around the city at various church meetings and other events. After graduation, Dean was called to serve an LDS mission to the Swiss-Austrian Mission. However, before he was scheduled to enter the mission home, Feb. 19, 1951, Dean received his draft notice to enter the U.S. Army. When he found out that he would be stationed in Ft. Reilly, Kan. in the middle of winter, Dean walked out of the recruiting office and the next day enlisted in the U.S. Navy. By that afternoon, Dean was on his way to San Diego, where he began training as a communications technician. It was while serving in the Navy that Dean started courting his sweetheart, Barbara "Bobbie" Lund. After dating a few times and many letters between them, Dean proposed to Bobbie, via a letter and the two were married Oct. 23, 1953, in the Hotel Utah, Salt Lake City. Following his service in the Navy, Dean and Bobbie moved back to Salt Lake to be with family. After driving a truck for Standard Oil for several years, it was the Zobrist family who influenced Dean?s move to Las Vegas in 1963, when he began driving for E&H Distributing. The long hours of sitting took its toll on his back and Dean eventually began a career in the construction industry, where he became a foreman for Kirk Roofing, Dean Roofing and S&L Roofing before retiring in June 1992. Dean and Bobbie were eventually sealed together, along with their children, for time and all eternity in the St. George Temple in 1964. Dean loved the gospel and faithfully served in many callings within the LDS church, but one of his greatest joys was serving in the Las Vegas Temple each week. He loved sharing his testimony of Jesus Christ and exemplified Christ?s example wherever he went. Dean loved his family very much. He cherished family gatherings where he would sit with his children and grandchildren and tell stories of his youth. He had a wonderful sense of humor with a very quick wit and would have everyone laughing in no time. He always had a kind word and a smile for everyone he met. Dean will be greatly missed by so many, but especially by his wife, Bobbie; their six children and spouses, Cris, Brad (Tammy), Brent (Beverly), Staci (Randy), David (Shanon) and Tyler (Joni); his 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Viewing will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, with funeral service at 11 a.m., both at the LDS Church, 875 Rich Perez Jr. Drive, Henderson. Burial will be private at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City.

I remember Bro Roberts as one of the cool dads in the old 21st ward. In later years I loved to see him in the temple with that amazing white hair. He would always ask how the Roundy's were. He was so genuine and happy. So thankful for the Plan of Salvation.

My family owned Dean Roofing Company and I worked there in the late 70's and early 80's. I remember Dean and his sons as kind, honest and hardworking men. I enjoyed visiting with Dean at work. I'm sorry to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace.

It was wonderful being in the same ward for so many years with all your family. Dean always had a smile for everyone and the best hugs ever. I will miss seeing him at the temple where he always welcomed everyone he knew with a big smile, hug, and often a witty remark. I have wonderful memories of the years we were in the same ward with him and your family. My prayers are with you at this time.
