Genevieve Spencer Obituary

GENEVIEVE SPENCER Genevieve "Janie" Hamm Spencer died peacefully Feb. 15, 2012, a Sacramento, Calif. resident of 58 years. Genevieve Hamm was born June 15, 1924, in Hudson, N.Y. She was raised in Nevis and Red Hook, N.Y. and in Las Vegas, at the Boulderado Guest Ranch. Janie was the last surviving resident of the Boulderado Ranch. Bette Losee was her mother. Bette and Edwin Losee owned the Boulderado (old Kiel Ranch) from about 1938 to 1953, selling the ranch to Edwin Losee's brother, Jim. In Sacramento, Janie finished college, getting a teaching credential, but chose to do administrative work for 20 years at Sutter Memorial Hospital. Janie did her teaching as a docent with the Sacramento History Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, and, for 20 years, at the Sacramento Zoo. She was preceded in death by her former husband, George Bennett Spencer. Surviving Janie are sons, Stephen B. of Richmond, Calif. and Philip R. of Capitola, Calif.; grandchildren, Jenna and Amy Spencer of Santa Cruz, Calif.; other family members, Claudia Spencer; Claudia's sons, Sean and Damon Mentzer; their sons, Christopher and Noble; and Toni Gardner. Dr. Ron Losee, of Ennis, Mont., was Janie's step brother. The late Mimi Campbell Clark of Las Vegas was her lifelong friend. Cremation was done by Nautilus Society, Sacramento. Janie's ashes are to be scattered at Daffodil Hill, Volcano, Calif. Donations may be made to Sacramento Zoo, www.saczoo.org Further info/comments, genevievehspencer at mail.com
